What else does GGG need to do to be considered an ATG?

    Nothing. He's already there.

Golovkin is #2 all time in most consecutive middleweight defenses (15). He is only 6 behind Hopkins after the Lemieux victory.

Golovkin is #8 all time in longest middleweight reign (5 years and 2 months, I think).

He has, I believe, 16 consecutive knockouts in title fights after the Lemieux victory.

Anyone who tries to "hold off" on Golovkin's greatness at this time either doesn't know boxing or else has an agenda.

When he decides to fight an A level fighter.. He's fought a bunch of B and C level opposition thus far.

Unify 160, beat Mayweather, but first real test would be Ward and finally Kov. Ward would be his Leonard and Kov his Hearns. Might fight Bute, Groves, Degale, and Jack at 168. Sky's the limit for Ggg.

for me the door to atg should be through the corridor of HoF.

And to be HoF you need to do something that stands out in history, however major or minor...which thereupon makes you famous.ie worthy of HoFame.

3G is yet to do this, however I don't doubt he could do it. A treble unification, record defences matching Hopkins or something similar will deliver, since I don't think theres any ATG available for him to face in order to use that route of "beating a great"

BUT hes got to do it quick, hes 34 soon (?) and time waits for no man. He needs to step up regularly as often as possible before he passes his prime.

    :deal

GGG has yet to fight a threat yet. Let alone be in a discussion for ATG status.

well yeh HoF should be the first aim, set himself apart from the unknown titlists and minor unifiers.

I think hes capable, but whether he can do it in the time remaining (3 years max?) is the problem. He shouldda started sooner, his fault really.

I recall joe calzaghe leaving it all to his last two real smw fights...what if joe hadn't been able to land those fights? ...what if kessler hadnt got injured allowing joe to come out of hiding and beat him in his protected home of cardiff??...without those things happening he'd be another nobody today with 20 largely worthless defences.

3G needs to make sure that doesn't happen to him too.

No but it helps him get the best fights available if all roads lead through him contenders can't avoid it. I'm also against guys holding the lineal claim hostage at catchweights like Cotto on principle.

Golovkin will likely have to establish himself as a true great, above middleweight. Golovkin has the problem of a weak era in his division and his title reign being tainted by the whole WBA regular title ****. He doesn't have the opposition to really prove his greatness at middleweight and it's hard to know when his reign began or how many defences he has had as a genuine world champion because of the fact he was only the regular champion and the Super champion was ducking him.

But if we take his reign as beginning at him winning the interim title he's now had 15 defences another 5 would see him equal Hopkins record. Beating that would be a start, that combined with becoming undisputed middleweight champion would at least give him an argument at being a great middleweight. But guys like Robinson, Hagler, Monzon and even Hopkins had better opposition, which is why what Golovkin does at a higher weight will likely have more impact on his legacy. I could see him going up to super middle and cleaning out the division without too much difficulty.

Keep winning and either continue to be a longstanding, dominant MW champion or move up in weight and ascertain lineal championships in other divisions.

The modern era of boxing is so much different compared to the golden years of the sport where fighters would fight their entire careers in one weight class. These days, if you campaign in one of the lighter weights and are a dominant fighter, it's almost expected for you to eventually move up in weight and attempt to win titles in multiple divisions. It's become much more common since the junior/super divisions have been incorporated into the sport.

Anyway, I personally can't knock a guy for wanting to stay in one weight class with the intention of unifying the division. Nobody ever gave Hagler **** for never moving up, so I don't see why Gennady should be criticized. I just wish the talent pool at MW was a bit more top heavy because as it stands now, I don't see anyone at 160 that has a chance against him.

    Hes getting there.
Keep winning, I think is the answer.
I think Golovkin has had certain things work against him in not winning a title but being awarded, which I think takes some fans time to accept. Now he has beaten a reigning champ it will go a long way.

With Hopkins he was often facing other fighters from America and based in America, so he was well known by the ring mag (

:patsch) as were his opponents or at least available for journalists and for the fights to be followed.
Golovkin beat Proksa which was a decent win in America, but I doubt many of the journalists there really knew of Proksa that well, probably hadnt seen him fight much before and likely never knew the fighter or interviewed him.

    !

Golovkin has so far defended a MW title around 16 times but only a few have arguably been what I think were decent MW defences. Around 7 IMO and I dont think out of those that many have been great defences, but I also think that is down to the era and as I have often said before that when you get a dominant champ, you dont seem to get fans realising how good a fighter is because they dominate so easily.
Just imagine if F Mayweather was a yesteryear fighter. I expect there would be many that would argue that if he was in this era with Pac, Marquez, Cotto etc that he may not do as well, but we know that Floyd was a great and he did do well.

Golovkin didnt get a torch passing fight against the previous top MW in Sturm and the previous top MW before (Hopkins) was appreciated more for what he did outside of MW and at LHW
