What else does GGG need to do to be considered an ATG?

I think that he needs to fight often and collect the rest of the MW belts. Funny that a few years ago people were commenting on how strong the MW division seemed to be, and now that a truly dominant fighter is here it's seen as weak.

All he can really do is dominate for as long as possible, and the weight of numbers will do it for him.

I also think that a few "legacy" fights at 168 would help, because that's clearly out of his natural weight class and then people can't say "he never fought anybody big". Although Murray seemed huge next to him, but whatever.

It would have been nice to have seen him against Chavez, Ward, Froch, but I'm guessing those trains have left for other stations.

He's well on his way to becoming an ATG.
We will see him pick up wins vs Andy Lee next, Cotto/Canelo winner and eventually Derevyanchenko (who is absolute poetry).
Golovkin will be recognised as an ATG because of the level of dominance shown in his fights and skill. It'll be a little like Felix Trinidad's run that made him a man of legend.
He should eventually move up to challenge at 168lbs, for legacy reasons.

The simple answer is: he needs to have some career-defining fights against great opposition. As long as the other 'champions' in his division avoid him, he will always be a "what if" kind of fighter.

In theory, if he could unify all the belts (I think he could, if the other pussies had the ***** to face him), then go up and beat a Ward or a Kovalev.....he'd be a shoe-in for the ATG list.

Damn shame that this avoidance issue continually goes on in boxing.

Which middle had better power and chin combined? How about NO ONE.

GGG put on a show. He can box well too.

I think part of the problem is fans like to see " legacy " fights, but legacy fights mostly happen when the fighters are close to evenly matched.

GGG is the Tyson or Dempsey of his times, except he has much better consistency, and I predict will have more title defenses.

What we have here is a very good technical pressure fighter who targets the head and body equally well who just happens to have one of the best chins in the history of the division, and hits I think as hard as 99% of the middles in the history of the division.

This is a good point. I think, had Hopkins called it a day just after or soon after the Taylor defeats, he would have struggled to be considered a consensus ATG.

If we look at where Golovkin is now, compared to where Hopkins was, after he was done with the MW division, you get some idea of what Golovkin needs to do to be deemed a Great. I think it would be fair to say that he needs to become the Undisputed MW Champ and this should, naturally, incorporate a bout with either Lee or Saunders and either Cotto or Alvarez; mirroring to some extent perhaps the tail-end of Hopkins' successful MW run.

After that, who knows? There's a possible housekeeping bout or two at MW - but SMW would also be beckoning Golovkin, at which he could do very well and maybe then achieve the ATG status.

Who, exactly, has hit him to test this theory?

This was a great performance against a good fighter. It's a step in the right direction. Clean out the other top fighters in division. Then we can talk ATG status. Right now he is clearly the best in his division and one of the top 2-3 fighters In world.

GGG IS an ATG now, he is so good he is facing the RJJ dilemma he is so dominant he is not seriously challenged.

Beating a guy you were fully expected to destroy does not bring you any closer to greatness.

Its not enough for these eastern euro fanboi's that he's the best of his era, he has to be greater than everybody who came before him on top of it. Sad.

Glovkin would be a lot better off without his moronic fanbase.

Leimux punched nothing but thin air last night ffs.

Glovkin made sure he didn't get tagged. He didn't put his chin at risk by going to war like we were promised.
He got hit with nothing. gtfo with GOAT chin.

He needs a few more handpicked mismatches and also a few more idiots like you to cheer him on for it and he's good to go.

golovkin is a great fighter. He makes it look so easy. He has amateur credentials which are fine as hell and his pro record in good, not great, but good.

just so i wont get called out for having an agenda, i would like to point out, that golovkin is one of only fighters who i really enjoy watching and listening to. No bull**** about him. When he fights, you know there is action and someone is getting brutalized.

With that said, his resume is thin as hell. Lemieux got beat up by that mexican lumberjack. He might have had a belt, but he is second rate at best and that is the story of golovkins resume as well.

With the lack of real quality at 160, he probably needs to go up to 168 and do something there. Lets face it, cotto is nothing special at MW and neither is canelo. Those are the only 2 he could beat and to an extent gain exposure, but exposure should not mean much when considering greatness.

forgot to mention, that beating hopkins record of title defences should give him recogniton and a place in the history books.

GGG needs to do much more. The MW division is ****e so he needs to clean it up or move up and beat Ward + one more. We have yet to see if his power is effective against top-top guys or more like Lacy. His chin hasn't been tested so now i wouldn't rate it anywhere near Hagler eg.

    Keep knocking dudes out.

Look at a rankings list, find the highest one that'll fight him, then take him apart.

    Keep doing it.

Give it another few years, and we'll have a modern day Monzon or Hagler on our hands. If the right fight shows up to move up for, take that. Otherwise, stay the course. With increased drawing power, he'll go from being desparate to landing good opponents to being in the driver's seat. I hope he doesn't become entitled like other fighters who felt like they had nothing to prove once they reached the top.
