both were good amateurs both turned pro at 17 and looked good lost a couple of fights and both retired at 22
Both were hyped by Warren (IIRC?), were decent fighters with a good dig but both enjoyed the high life (to put it politely) and were only ever Brit/ Euro level fighters. Both were a little on chinny side as well even George, who was only stopped by Laing, survived a couple of scares on the way up. George lost to Kirkland Laing and Gary Jacobs which is no disgrace and seemed a strange reason ro retire to me. Tony was the younger brother and some said a better fighter but I didn't see it that way TBH.
I remember George losing to Gary Jacobs but he won my herat that night because he really tried and gave everything and just came up short. He went for it and that is to be commended.
I seem to recall George getting a beating at the hands of Laing. Perhaps that knocked the fight out of him?
George I felt was always going to get found out, and Jacobs was the person to that. I had a lot more time for Tony, but I think he turned pro too early and rushed up too soon. He had a very good fight with a Nunez, also winning a rematch.
Yep, but Laing could do that to the best of them when he was in the mood. I thought for a 22 year old to go down on points to Gary Jacobs was a reasonable result and might be something to build upon. Having said that he'd been wobbled by a few ordinary fighters on the way up so maybe he knew what he was doing... I only saw Tony a few times but remember him being the slightly better boxer but without quite the dig of his brother.
