Or specificaly, what would they do in a h2h to beat him... because I am watching the Cadilli tape and I just don't see it.

Pep is incredible. I would go so far as to say that the fighter I am seeing here has me thinking he was the better fighter than Robinson h2h ,although I know Robinson's best days aren't on film. More than likely (yes, thats it come to think of it) I am just intoxicated at the moment with the movement, cleverness, and range of skills I see in him. He has the best attributes of a composite of our best fighters today and that doesn't describe him justly. He is a 2035 year model fighting in the 1940's.

But I diverge. My main point is that I would be interested to hear who you have beating this man in his best form. I can't imagine many personaly.

I really must get this footage, and will in due time. You make a very compelling case.

But as far as right now, I have to agree with the highlighted portion of your post, as it often happens to me when studying one fighter.

Based on the limited amount of footage I've seen of Pep, I have to believe he'd outmanuver them, outbox them, and disrupt their rhythms to win clear cut decisions. I also believe that they'd all have their moments and were very capable of winning some rounds, just not enough to beat a sublime fighter like Pep. But I haven't seen as much as you have, so don't take my opinion seriously.

I think it's pretty clear that Pep had superior movement, footwork, defensive skills, and reflexes than either of the three Mexican greats you mentioned. But with respect to Marquez, how does Pep's counterpunching compare? And with respect to Barrera, how does his jab and body attack compare?

IMO the best arguement for a win from this class of three would be for Marquez and his counterpunching abilities. I see Pep beating Barrera or Morales in a 8-4/ 10-5 scenario. Morales, especially, would be extremely frustrated with Pep and would walk to him and be countered fairly easily.

Marquez is a masterful counterpuncher and holds that distinction over Pep, but I see Pep's jab being every bit as effective as that of Barrera.

Moreover anything, Pep is masterful at everything defensive. His footwork is effortless and graceful. At range, he slips, ducks off to the side, or parries shots off with the glove. In close he rolls under punches with ease. His positioning is always near perfect, no matter what the distance. In the clinches he knows exactly where he is and tucks his head neatly where it need be, picking up his opponents movements tactily with his own arms and adjusting accordingly. Then he does things like turning Cadili 180 degrees. He is incredibly intuitive and always two steps ahead.

Yes I was over zealous, but I couldn't help it. Pep is incredible though.

Out of curiosity, have you or Brooklyn ever watched a fighter and felt this type of feeling, that maybe he was the best or one of? And that the consensus picks are wrong?

I have had this two times- with RJJ and Pep tonight. Its never happened with my other favorites like Barrera, Gavilan, Arguello, etc. Strange.

    ACB,

:good I have Willie Pep as my # 1 fighter of all time. Whats underated about Willie Pep is his punching skills. The man threw incredible combinations. They flew off his hands like a ball thrown by john elway. They were fast, crisp, and accurate. Pep was never out of bosition, he always knew how to get a fighter off balance. He was a master artist. His revenge win over Sandy Saddler when he was past his prime is considered one of the greatest performances by a fighter in history.

Its also amazing how impressed you are the with the Pep in this fight, considering Pep was a shadow of his former self by 1955.

Actualy, this is something I forgot in my response to Brooklyn, and you are exactly right. Pep seems a much more offensive fighter than his youtube footage would make someone think. There were times in the fight I was watching tonight that he let his hands fly, and I can easily see with the combination of his widely known defense, and as you say his very underated offense, why you would have him as your #1.

I think Pep is probably the best pure boxer that ever lived, maybe Driscoll could win one of three against him ,and Saddler would allways be tough.MAB would give him the best fight of the three I feel his defence was a little better than Morales, who would be picked clean by Willie.

Every fight in history even the great willie pep has problems with at least one fighter due to styles. Peps stylistic nightmare was sandy saddler a tall physical freak with a snake left jab and devasting two fisted power......and Pep past his prime had to face saddler. Yet unlike alot of fighters in history, Pep managed to adjust to his kyrptonite and beat it. I think a few feathers in history have a good chance of beating pep, but i wouldnt favor anyone in history over him, and I think willie pep at his best would probably beat them all.

    everyone should watch this video

I have never seen anyone in history with the fluid movement, mind boggling footwork, slick defensive moves, craft ring manuevers, of willie pep. It was like he was skating on ice.

I'm a little thrown by this. I see Pep picking up a cadence on Pac fairly quickly and finding a way to avoid his left hand. More over, I see him using his jab and footwork- especially given that he seems to be able to move perpetually through a long fight without tiring- to keep Pac from being able to set his feet. Seems that if Pep could get a guage on Pac's cadence, a disciplined effort would give him the decision.

Or is it not the left hand you are worried about but rather the preasure over many rounds that Pac presents? I am curious.

Marquez is the guy I see giving him the toughest scrap, due to his ability to counterpunch and vary his timing and rythym through a long fight, and for his high Nacho Beristain guard that would require Willy to commit a little more and thus open up countering oportunities. He has the adaptability I feel one needs to beat Pep, although I don't see him doing it.

    I have Pep at No.2 P4P.

I believe he's untouchable in his prime at 126lbs.
