Let me be simple. Too have a chance vs Pep you have to have some freakish tools. Pacman has freakish dynamite power in both fists/great punching skills/and ridiculous handspeed, solid jab, and he is a southpaw, and he is very tough. For anyone in history to have a chance at beating a peak pep.......they have to have ATG punching abilities(which saddler had as well as the freakin long arms, height which pacman lacked).

Counterpunching wont work.......you cannot possibly beat pep at his own game. You cant. You cant outbox pep. You have to have some sort of punching skills power that would require your ability to get to pep and knock him out(which JMM did not pocess) but Pacman does.

I dont think pacman does, but he gives pep a bigger threat than JMM who loses a wide decision to pep

From what I understand Angott was beating Pep just as badly with his jab on the outside as he was with his roughing tactics.

Angott had 10 good natural lb on pep, the mans too big. its like sandy saddler stepping up to fight ike williams. 2ndly, what fight reports have you read on angott-pep because from the accounts I have read, Pep deserved the decision. Third, whose to say marquez was anywhere near as good as a hall of famer like sammy angott?

Marquez did not pocess a jab like sandy saddlers which was long and snake like. On film, saddlers jab is nearly non existent in the 3rd and 4th pep fights as peps head movement, shoulder rolls, slick cutie manuevers, evade the jab at all times. all of the other film I have of pep, their jabs are non existent vs pep. Unless Angot had one of the better jabs of all time, i find it hard to believe angott put a clinic on pep with his jab.

I've not read any fight reports, I've heard them from a poster on here who has access to all sorts of material like that. Also, Angott was known for his roughing tactics first and foremost, not his boxing and countering skills. Apparently he had a strong jab though, but I very seriously doubt he was as technically skilled as Marquez, as Marquez is one of the best I've seen in that regard.

Saddler had a long jab, it was not a great jab by any means. Saddler was pretty damn limited as a boxer, that was not his area at all. His area was in close, in the clinch, using his immense reach and lanky arms to land shots when the opponent was tied up. That's a reason I think he'd have always been a rough matchup for Pep.

Just reporting what I've heard, but styles are styles, and sometimes the greats can be tamed by certain fighters.

Also, I wasn't making a case for Marquez in my original post, just responding to your statement.

Well I certainly agree with that!

I slightly disagree, why it was no means his best weapon it was a well rounded one. It was long, he shot it out their like a snake and it had some zip behind it....he used it pretty damm well against redtop davis in their fight. I feel like he did not use it enough though, and had he used it more he wouldnt have suffered losses that he should have won.

Im not a big JMM fan, I am a big Pacman fan. so i guess opinions differ. I defintley see the talent in JMM, but I also think more highly of Pacman. i guess its all how you view styles

This pre-crash Pep myth must be of the same kind as the light-heavyweight Ezzard Charles, how he is depicted by some people here (which is totally contradicted by footage). The 1945 Ralph Walton fight doesn't quite remind what is described here.

Kind of like a myth of skilled punchers of his era. While anyone who has seen enough footage of them knows they had average or slightly above average skills.

When someone has a chance to compare Saddler and pre-crash Pep's opponents of whom the footage is available, notice a difference?

Against a prime Salvador Sanchez it would be a toss up.

Salvador Sanchez was an All time great featherweight top 4 all time, in a match between him and a prime willie pep, i see a razor thin 8 rounds to 7 win for pep. Pep edges it out with his ring generalship and more clean punches landed. My father thinks sanchez would knock pep out. He does not think very highly of pep, partly because he is a huge sandy saddler fan so Me and him bicker back and forth all the time about it. His # 1 featherweight of all time is salvador sanchez.

Factor in Pep's vulnerability to cuts and Sanchez' power advantage & incredible stamina & were back to toss up! Really could go either way.
