What excuses will we hear when Povetkins steps into ring against Anthony Joshua?

It's possible! But I think it's unlikely because when Wladimir Klitschko learned that tactic, it took him some time before he mastered it. Anthony Joshua has never employed such a tactic before and is extremely unlikely to be as as effective and as successful at using such a tactic overnight against Alexander Povetkin.

And I might be wrong, but I learned that Wladimir Klitschko actually comes from a wrestling background. Whilst Anthony Joshua doesn't! So even if Anthony Joshua learned to use such a tactic, he may never be as effective as Wladimir Klitschko at using it.

I also think Wladimir Klitschko in 2013 (even though he was slightly past his best) had the much faster foot speed and straight punching speed compared to current Anthony Joshia. Which is what makes it more difficult to close the distance against Wladimir Klitschko compared to Anthony Joshua who is easier to close the distance against successfully.

This is why I'm so frustrated that Alexander Povetkin vs Anthony Joshua didn't happen in 2014, 2015 or even 2016 because I think Povetkin would've done much better against Joshua than he did against Wladimir Klitschko due to styles and abilities. He may even have been able to beat Joshua by being able to keep the high intensity, pressure and work rate up for 12 rounds. I doubt he could do it now though!
