I'm pretty obsessed with Duran-Whitaker of late, but would luv to sit down and either watch Marciano-Dempsey or Morales-Gomez, the world would be brought to a stop out of sheer, sheer, respect.

Stonehands, I take my hat off to you. I'm impressed that you think so highly of Marquez's technical ability. I've been high on him for quite sometime. Infact, when it comes to what style captivates me the most, it would be his probably. Not sure if you have me sussed yet on what particular styles I admire. I'm very high on boxers who are tidy on the eye and multi-dimensional like Hopkins, Duran, Robinson, Whitaker, Holmes, Hearns, Hagler, Marquez, Locche, etc.

A solid jab, accuracy, movement, combinations, defensive awareness. Those are my key areas.

 

You have sophisticated tastes when it comes to styles, Robbi. I figured you for it. Many confuse Whitaker and Pep for Ali and his fellow athletes. Pea and Pep are like the great painters -highly skilled and well-trained but with innovation. They take technique into outer space but couldn't do it without that all-important foundation in fundamentals.

While Duran was walking down to the ring for the Hagler fight (to "Eye of the Tiger" if I recall), someone said that Duran's style was akin to "

". I loved that description. Loved it. I'd say that any style that satisfies that combination of aggression and exemplary skill is my favorite. Barrera had it. Marquez has it. I'm big fans of both and that bout had me hypnotized. Toney and McCallum had it too and that fast-paced chess match is one of my all-time favorite matches -it's graduate level boxing. (Wlad Klitschko, by comparison, is grammar school.)

Marquez's defeat of Casamayor -the consensus best Lw in the world, was very impressive. The fact that he did it to see and raise Manny injects it with high drama. Manny had just stepped up and taken a LW belt and everyone cheered... Juan came up chasing Manny and just completely eclipsed it. You gotta love that. I hope they fight soon. I'm betting on Juan. And not a little... I don't give a damn if Pacquiao knocks Oscar cold.

It's just riveting.
