Always used to stay up as a kid watching the Barry McGuigan fights, but that was only so I could spot my Dad sitting at ringside. The fight that really got me interested was the first Collins-Eubank fight. Haven't looked back since.
The first fight I remember was Bruno vs McCall. but did not realy get what was going on. then a combo of Collins vs Eubank 1 and 2, Benn vs Collins 1 and 2, Hammed vs Robinson, Tyson vs Holyfield, Lewis vs Holyfield and Hammed vs Kelly. But it was Calzaghe vs Lacy that got me hooked.
too be honest from about the calzaghe lacy fight thats roughly when i started to be actually hooked as in everyday foloowing of boxing, that was a great night:good
Tyson - Berbick I remember my old man bringing me down to watch it in the morning and i knew then, despite being so young that i was witnessing something pretty special. Been hooked on the sport ever since :good Tyson must have been responsible for many guys my age (28) getting into the sport due to the excitement factor.
Bruno - Tyson but I was watching Tyson before this fight Then I would listen to my brother bang on about Mohammed Ali, around that time (I think I was in primary school so it was probably about 20 years ago) there was a weekly/monthly magazine that was released complete with a video, each issue was about a certain ATG like Ali, La Motto, Sugar Ray Leonard & Robinson, Hagler/Hearns. They were awesome & my brother bought them religiously so I got to watch the vids and read the mags. Then through the years it was Eubank & Benn Benn vs McLellan The showboating of Prince Naseem The Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis Saga And then the internet and youtube came along and we were able to look up any boxer & any fight watch guys I could never really get access to before. and now I would watch two drunks flailing at each other in the ring, I just look for each big match up as they come along.
I think it was just called "Boxers". Bought a ton of them at the time myself, and they really helped feed my interest in the sport.
Ali vs Spinks I I was 9 years old. My dad was into boxing and so I had seen plenty of fights before but this one seemed to have that extra razzamataz. It was the first fight which had an impact on me - the commentators were clearly affected by Ali's loss. They LOVED him and you could tell they was gutted he'd lost. When he came back and beat him just 7 months later I was so happy. Leonard, Duran, Hagler and Hearns cemented my life as a boxing fan in the early 80's.
Sparring at my local gym! I got whacked and got my revenge. Revenge is sweet! Then came Naseem. What a fighter, and what a star.
Tyson v Bruno 1. I was 6 and Bruno was a legend in my house and i can remeber this fight like it was yeaterday. After the fight was over i became a loyal Tyson fan. Haaaa them were the days:thumbsup
