loyd honeygan v don curry one of the best p4p boxers in the world at the time, loyd kicked his american ass:happy :happy :happy :happy
not many people will remember but this fight was the very first day of sky tv. feb 1989 sky used boxing to launch and now its basically an afterthought to them. a lot of dish`s and boxes were sold om the back of this fight, obviously by your parents as well. from memory sky was free at that time.
I was 7 at the time and remember getting up at about six in the morning and waking my Dad up to ask him who won. He told me Bruno had lost, I was gutted but I had to watch the video anyway - just in case !! Cant remeber any fights, other than Rocky, earlier than that so this must be my first.
I listened to the Ali- Liston fight on the Radio (when ali won the title) even though i use to watch friday night fights with my dad.
tyson - neilson fight was coming up free on my cable box and i just watched it and got very interested in boxing from there on in
Didn't know that - I'm sure my mate had Sky before then - but it's a long time ago McGuigan - Pedroza was on in the vault of the pub at a family function, loved the atmosphere of all the fellas cheering him on, even though I was too young to know anything about the sporting event itself After that Tyson - Berbick really got me into it
For me it was the Bruno vs Witherspoon fight that got me into boxing. In the late 80s I have very fond memories of Seconds Out, which really introduced several important boxers notably Nigel Benn. I still remember well the days when he hadn't been taken past 4 rounds! I also remember him knocking out some guy with the first punch he threw in round 1. Other boxers I remember from Seconds Out were James Oyebola, and the Collins brothers (Tony and George). Plenty of others too, most of whom perhaps didn't go too far.
SKY started in the early 80s, but you right in that this was the first BIG attempt to sell Satellite TV to the British public. Irony being I think Tyson/BrunoII was the first (sporting?) PPV on British TV.... The first fight I went to was Hagler/Minter..... a horrible experience for a six year old. Many of Minter's fans were thugs, and Alan himself was hardly the classiest individual ever, and has to take some responsibility for the riot after the fight, due to his pre fight comments.
