I was a casual observer of boxing from about age 7 when I watched the U.S. amateur team on TV at the 76 Montreal Olympics. Soon after, I watched an occasional pro fight on network TV - There were a plethora of free TV fights back then. But I became a "hardcore" boxing fan after watching the second Boza-Edwards v. Chacon fight. It had me on the edge of my seat and enthralled. Then, shortly after the fight I stumbled across a KO magazine at the local drugstore. I was hooked.

What fight, if there was a specific one, did this to you?

That fight was a really big thing even over in the states. I'm on the west coast, and they aired that fight at a very unusual time, very late in the afternoon just before prime time. Usually fights started earlier. The result even made the world news on ABC, which was unheard of. There was more to that fight than boxing. People forget that now, but that was a huge fight. Pity Barry couldn't make more of a run than he did. Boxing needed him.

I remember seeing Ali Spinks as a kid but really didn't get into the sport of years. I liked Ali though since he had a cartoon & fought Superman in a comic book! I loved Rocky III & started to watch a fight every so often. It wasn't until I saw a story about Tyson that I started watching regularly. I think it was Tyson Ribalta I saw first. Hagler Leonard really hooked me too.

I remember hearing the excitement around Mike Tyson, and couldn't wait to watch his next fight to see what he was all about. I watched him blast out Carl the truth Williams in the first round. I was 10 years old. I thought Mike Tyson was invincible

A good friend of my dad was a boxing trainer and my dad used to go regular with him to watch his fighters.
He took me with him when I was about 8 years old and I was hooked from the very first fight. I'd watched a few of my dad's boxing videos but watching live is what got me into it big time

I'm kind of jealous of those here who can point to a singular moment that infused boxing into their system and took their lives off into this direction the way is has. I have no such interesting story. It wasn't any one fight with me, it was just coming to the understanding that boxing was an enterprise where it was one guy making his own way and having to show more courage and resolve than other athletes. For a shy, quiet kid who wanted somehow to be noticed in his own way, I felt a kinship with them in that way I suppose.

    So............boxing it would be.

It wasn't any particular fight with me, I'd always wanted to be a boxer and I wanted to box like ken buchanan and john conteh.I'll never ever forget my first fight and even though I came second i was proud of myself.
I had another 36 but you never forget your first.
