I've been reading up on Harry Greb on line, and I bought a book on his life the other day.

I've been watching a lot of Jose Napoles. An amazing boxer.

I've been watching a lot of Shane Mosley and Tito Trinidad lately, both excellent fighters. But the fighter I've been watching a studying the most is James Toney. I had always heard about what a great fighter he was but had never really watched to much of him. I recently got his career set from boxingjunkies.com and have been watching it from the beginning to end. He was truly a brilliant fighter both defensively and offensively and in every division he fought in. He uses the shoulder role to perfection to set up his counter punches and his combinations are excellent and crisp. He attacks both the body and the head very well. He had some great fight as well, his fight with Jirov was one of my favorites and I had never even heard about it before watching it. When Toney was really on and motivated he was about as good as anyone.

Toney is indeed a brilliant fighter who fights with pure talent/instinct. He anticipates what his opponent will do next in a way Benitez could.
I scored both Montell Griffin fights for Toney but I thought Tiberi got kinda "robbed" against Toney.

Yeah honestly I'm at Toney's first fight with Rahman in his career set and to this point I only feel he really clearly lost 1 fight. I scored both the Toney vs Griffin fights and had them both clearly in Toney's favor. The fight with Thadzi I didn't score but I felt was close. Toney was clearly the better fighter and I felt clearly had control throughout the early part of the fight but Thadzi made it close late by out working a sluggish Toney. The fight with Tiberi I didn't score either and again it was close like the Thadzi fight. In both fights I felt Toney was clearly the one landing the better punches but was being out worked. I'll have to score both of those fights next time I watch them to decide what my opinion is on who really deserved the victory. But in fights like the one against Barkley, Littles, Williams, Jirov etc where Toney really showed up focused and in good shape its hard to picture to many fighters being able to handle him.

Toney/McCallum 1 is a great display of boxing skill by both fighters. It was called a draw but I always thought Toney won it and it was a great performance by a 23 year old young champion.

Throughout all his weight classes, I think it's fair to say Toney was often guilty of doing just enough to win and not extending himself to dominate fights the way I think he could have. He was in so many close scrapes, often because he simnply allowed a lot of lesser fighters to outhustle him.
