What fighter would out counter or out skill Whitaker

Are we talking about the same Griffith? Because other than being faster, I don't think Whittaker had a lot of physical advantages over Griffith.

 

I think that is more skill set, but if you did possibly. But I was talking more strength, stamina, chin, etc.

Whitaker would get bulldozed if he stood his ground with Emile. There's no way he would stand in there with him other than for very brief periods. This doesn't have anything to do with being outskilled or outhought, or anything of the sort. It's pure physics.

 

Stamina even, more or less. And chin it's no contest.

Griffiths chin was very good wasn't it?

I'm not as familar with him as others but the Hurricane Carter fight aside I can't recall him being floored or KO'd many times (Monzon also stopped him but that was a TKO I think). Even the Carter fight I'd probably class as an aberration as he was simply caught cold by a big puncher and couldn't recover. I'm guessing if they met another half a dozen times Carter couldn't do that to Griffith again but that's irrelevent.

I may be wrong of course but I'd say his chin was every bit as good as Whitakers as he competed at a high level against very good opposition for a long time.

It's not so much punching power that Whitaker needs to contend with as much as raw strength. Griffith was much stronger than anyone Whitaker faced with the exception of Vasquez, and he is a lot more skilful than Vasquez.

Griffith loved to lean on guys at welterweight and use his greater strength to wear opponents down. A good example is the Griffith-Stable fight. The smaller Stable was as gutsy as they come, a good infighter, and gave a tremendous effort, but Griffith just wore him out and pretty much finished Stable as an elite welterweight.

If Whitaker stands in the pocket with Griffith, he will get manhandled.

His only hope in that one is to fight with the Whitaker-Chavez gameplan. Constant movement, little spots on the inside, and vacate the premises A.S.A.P.

 

I disagree with that. I have yet to see a fighter that's clearly more skilled than Floyd.

 

It's actually better - at least from a technical standpoint. Whitaker was more natural IMO, but he also had the clearer technical flaws.
