:yikes Those are the favorite fighters of my father too . . . including Duran, Hearns, Hagler, Salvador Sanchez, Azuman Nelson, Wilfred Benitez, Henry Armstrong, Pernell Whitaker, Alexis Arguello, Joe Louis, Floyd Patterson, Joe Frazier, George Forman. I grew up with my father watching them all the time . . . so I inherited it. But it was Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard which really made me addicted to this sports.
my dad's were Jose "Mantequilla" Napoles, "Pajarito" Moreno, "Puas" Olivares, Jose Becerra, Pipino Cuevas, Ray Mancini, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Mike Tyson, and later Julio Cesar Chavez. now he's a margarito and pacman fan. but of all i would say he was a huge fan of Pajarito Moreno and Chavez. he also really enjoyed Popo Freitas fights, he thought Popo could of achieved alot more in his career. ah, almost forgot oscar, but really who the hell didn't watch an oscar fight?
:conf My dad didnt talk alot about boxing, except he liked marciano and Louis. Tony Zale and Graziano. he talked alot about Harry Greb and Stanley Ketchel but I suspect my grandpa told him about them. Dad hated Ali, called him Ali babba and a draft dodger. A traitor. My dad did see Tyson mowing thru those tomato cans on shows like Friday night fights and indeed was impressed. hed say "you should watch this guy....hes going to be something".
Let ME just say to guys (answering for my kid:yep) when I was 16-17 standing at the top of the Welterweight rankings were Pepino Cuevas and Carlos Palomino..two very talented and different fighters in their own right.... then the next four guys ranked (KO magazine) were Sugar Ray Leonard, Wilfred Benitez, Thomas Hearns, and Roberto Duran. I used to jerk off to those rankings, comtemplating the possibilities of future bouts. Plus, Pryor was the new Jr Welter Champ, Hagler and Holmes reigns were about to start, the golden era of Lightheavies was going on...plus Sanchez, Danny Lopez, Zarate and Zamora, Gomez, Arguello.... man I can go on and on. I put that era against any and im happy to say I got to live it.:good
My grandfather was a big fan of Pepino Cuevas. Massive groupie. He had some stories to tell about how much Cuevas and Duran didn't get along before his brain rotted via Alzheimers. My dad is one of those random HW fans. Likes guys like Wlad, Vitali, Arreola and of course the usual classic heavies.
"El Raton" Macias, Pipino Cuevas, Rodolfo "Gato" Gonzales. Not sure if anyone here is familiar with "el Raton" and "Gato" though.
