It's very difficult to judge a fighters legacy when he still hasn't retired. Best wait several years at least before that kind of debate happens. But in terms of Roy Jones, perceptions will be favourable because we can easily split his career into two distinct blocks; pre and post Ruiz. Many fans, like me, will just airbrush the post and remember how utterly brilliant and peerless he was in the pre.

No, not at all. I just think Ray, as a defensive/offensive fighter was superior. His combination punching is light years ahead of Mayweather Jr.

You see, there are guys out there who would/did gave Mayweather a tough fight. Guys like Castillo. Casamayor at 130 for example would have caused him all sorts of problems. Even Judah posed questions early on. An old DLH ran him close, and I honestly think a prime DLH at 147 would 'beat his ass'. Or prime Winky at 154 - these are all opponents that Mayweather wouldn't simply brush aside.

Now look at a prime Roy Jones. The man was utterly peerless, he made James Toney look like Gary Lockett. For ten years no one could lay a glove on him. He was the best of the best, in my eyes.

I don't understand....i was lead to believe Mayweather was a genius who reinvented defensive boxing with every masterpiece he paints on th fistic canvas, but i just stumbled across this obscure african **** with a weird name who nobody ever mentions among the great fighters doing everything Floyd does with ease, and with a much, much better left hand; and he got knocked out in one round by featherfisted Michael Nunn!!!.

Have i been had?.I think we might have to reassess mayweather here.Just doesn't add up.

    Kalambay:deal

That's the thing; some fans seem to think what Floyd is doing technically has never been done before.

Herol Graham was one to watch

Could not lay a glove on him - apart from Julian Jackson lucky punch

And the last person you wanna be nailed a lucky punch by is Julian Jackson of all people

Jackson was 46 wins with 43 KO's with only 1 loss - dynamite in his fists

Im with Chriswrench on this. Floyds ability is unmatched imo. The fact he never has to perform in deep waters too often is imo more of a testament to his game than lack of opposition. Also in agreement about the subject of fighters of the past being way overrated. Its the way this sport is and likely always will be. I have watched boxing for 20 odd years and seen and read alot of stuff about the fighters of yesteryear and although their have been some great era's where fantastic trilogies have taken place I'd put some of our modern day trilogies head to head with any of them.

(I'd rather have Gatti v Ward 1 in my collection before any of the fights between the fab four with Hagler Hearns a close second)

    From 80s onwards:

    Sugar Ray Leonard
    Roy Jones Junior
Manny Pacquiao (if he beats Mayweather)

DLH in his prime at 147 was a hell of a fighter, I've already said I think he'd beat Mayweather. His level of competition at that weight was very high, so FMJ wouldn't have been a huge step up in terms of quality.
