What Fighter's Downfall Saddened You The Most?

Not that I was alive to witness it or anything, but watching Joe Louis lose really makes me pretty upset sometimes. He just didn't deserve to go out like that.

 

Erik Morales. He was always my second favourite fighter, but I never realised how much I loved the guy until I saw him on the canvas against Pacquiao. Was terribly devastating, and the third fight was just awful.

 

Meldrick Taylor without question..
this guy was one of the best I ever seen.
but he got everything beat out of him the night he fought Chavez.
Julio should have been arrested for what happened that night.

 

Tyson definitely.

 

In a way, Holyfield losing to fat James Toney was sad. To that point, I had never really been a Holy fan, but seeing him lose like that made me realise just how important to the division he had once been. I missed the days when you could always count on him rallying back and fighting hard. That night, he just looked old. At least he was dignified in defeat.
(Of course, the old man has continued since, but to me the Toney fight was his last hurrah.)

Seeing Joe Louis being nothing more than a shadow of his old self is always sad.
Ali's limp attempt against Holmes was equally sad...

Funnily enough, even as a Tyson fan I was not saddened when he started to lose consistently. When McBride beat him, I just felt relief that he was finally retiring.

 

I'll second that.

 

Seeing Ali getting pummelled by Holmes was pretty grim for me.

 

Erik Morales. I felt, after his win over Pacquiao, he'd be able to beat Corrales or Castillo for the title. Rahim loss seemed to be mostly because of his spoiling style, but the rematch with Pacquiao proved it was more than that, I felt sick for a while after watching his downfall.

 

Page soaks up Coetzee's best right hands with both in their prime, goes 12 with Witherspoon easy etc but Spinks, a very average hitter at heavy stops him? No chance.

 

This didn't sadden me, but the way Leonard lost to Camacho. I really was against Ray taking this fight. There was no shame in losing to Terry Norris, but this affair was a complete joke.

Also, Tony Ayala self-destructing and Sanchez dying so young. They never maximized their potential.

The brain-damaged condition that Meldrick Taylor, Muhammad Ali, Wilfred Benitez, and other fighters are in today. THAT is sad.

 

Sweet pea has evoked a response of slight paranoia from ayalas' only fan....

No, Coetzee was shot by then, the man could always take a good punch but seemed to lose his chin in that fight and others after, the Bruno fight was another...Page was in shape for that fight and was a good fighter when fit..garbage when he was not

 

Coetzee was possibly peak ability wise when Page beat him, and coming off his finest victory ever. Prior to the Dokes fight he had hired Jackie McCoy who made a very significant difference to his confidence as well as helping him find his left hand again and fight with more purpose and plan. Page had a very powerful right hand and it was a punishing weapon when he was in shape. In this fight Coetzee took plenty of big right hands and was knocked out brutally at the end. We can blame the Page KO for Coetzee's thereafter chin troubles. It's actually a quite brutal fight. Both men take some huge artillery.
