From middleweight up to heavyweight. I see very few but Foster, Jackson and Foreman have to be obvious guesses.
I think that when we get into the best men at heavyweight, and what we today call cruiserweight, you would find men capable of doing it. They might end up being mercy stoppages, but the fight would get waved off.
It's a tough thing to speculate honestly. After all he is human. One thing is for sure, he was not afraid of anyone. Aside from his incredible defensive ability, he had a grit and toughness to him.
No-one south of HW. It'd probably take a Louis or a Liston to KO him at HW too, if big bangers like Rahman and Peter couldn't.
Probably only the best punchers and finishers at HW. Maybe someone like Langford or Fitzsimmons, but it's not a sure thing either.
I am a big fan of Toney However, at heavyweight, there are several guys from the 90's and 00's and 10's alone that would stop him Vitali, Wlad, Lewis, Bowe, Tyson, peak Foreman, Joshua etc. At light-heavy? Only Moore, Foster, and Spinks have a chance among modern fighters. at 168? Only McClellan and even that's unlikely at 160? I don't see it
Even up through cruiser, I could see Toney giving out a free whack a`la Ricardo Mayorga to pretty much anybody without paying the price this hubris usually nets fighters (namely, being KTFO). Incidentally, who do we reckon has the biggest punch sub-200? I would imagine the shortlist we're looking at includes Haye, Braxton/Qawi, Holyfield, Briedis, Gassiev, Kudryashov... presumably the Spinks Jinx in theory, and that patented Suzie Q of Marchegiano's? Ruby Rob? Old Mongoose? Deputy Sheriff? Anything obvious I'm missing? Anyway, yeah. James could probably let 'em all have one, no tricks, none of his usual rolling and slipping business, and still keep his feet. One, though.
He is actually really cool. I have met him twice both times when he fought in St Louis. One of the nicet pro fighters that I have met.
If Toney is in good shape and fights a mostly defensive fight at heavyweight I would think that a 80s Tyson might be the type to stop him. Toney didn't leave much to hit with his cross arms and rolling, it'd be tough for a guy who threw one big shot at a time to hit him and hurt him and then land again before he recovers. Tyson would throw a lot of punches at his range and some would get through. If Toney would get caught, Tyson would use angles to keep landing. Then if Toney was defending his head and Tyson got to the body... Most big punchers probably load up too much or only throw one or two at a time, that type of puncher would have a hard time landing on Toney. Toney at heavyweight (from memory) was defense first, guys like that are hard to stop. A Larry Holmes type could win big with his jab, but may not hurt Toney...another guy who might stop him would be Bowe (almost forgot him), his inside fighting and size would make it hard for Toney to just be defensive. Povetkin or Frazier might get to Toney on the inside too. A lot would depend on whether Toney has enough on his punches to get the respect of other inside fighters.
In boxing Nobody. Toney had durability like Al Gainer, Kid Gavilan, and Marion Wilson and he also had great defense.
Exactly, that's what is crazy. Toney, and to a lesser extent (on both counts) PBF had this dual layer of protection - being nigh untouchable in the pocket when he/they wanted to be, and then even if you get past that slick line of defense, you have to put up with unreal ATG chin.
At middle~supply middle nobody LW spinks foster maybe ! Cruiser .Holy ..Briedas .HW big punchers I guess .
So true. Also add in his toughness on top of his great defense and chin and you have an all time badass. I remember when he tore his bicep in the first round against Rydell Booker and fought on with practically one arm. You could see him grimacing in the corner but he still fought on. He completely ruptured the tendon in his elbow which is painful as hell.
Under 200 lbs, Louis, Marciano, and Dempsey have the biggest punches. Although Louis was 207 lbs at his peak vs Budy Bear.
