He had quite a unique style of breaking his opponent down. I just saw his fight with Tony Licata (in MSG) for the first time. Tony pretty much was outclassed but you wouldn't say so from a technical point of view. Monzon is a strange but ridiculously effective fighter. It seems that a lot of Argentinian fighters have an unorthodox style.

I used to love watching Monzon;I've never liked watching Bernard Hopkins-but they're styles are related in terms of being big and "awkward".

You beat me to it! I'm a huge Monzon fan from back in the seventies, and I believe he and a very select few reside in the stratospheres as elite fighters. That much said, I can't think of very many fighters stylewise that are even remotely like him, except for Vitali Klitschko, and that isnt comparing saying that V.K is anywhere near as great as Monzon. I thought that, as Vitali won the title against Sanders, and in his lone defense against Williams that he seemed to fight like a heavyweight Monzon. I'm sorry that he had to retire so soon with knee problems as I've always thought he was the better of the two brothers, which is contrary to the opinion of most.

Vitali Klitschko, good one, same stand up style and awkward punching, choping right, tall for division, good jab...pretty close

Interesting comparison. On style I can see it as both men used size, a superior punch out put, and an awkward style to beat their opponents. I do think Vitlai’s ability to score knockouts was greater than Monzon's, and beleive it or not, Vitlai might have had faster hands. Monzon was a better body puncher. Both guys had top chins.

Monzon was never dynamic fighter with power or speed. With him it was skills, grit, stamina, and durability that wore his best opponents down. Monzon was a great 15 round fighter. I think it is fair to say he would be a tad easier to defeat in 12 round matches.

I'd say Manny steward era Lewis is much closer to Monzon than Klitschko.

Vitali is just a basic mediocre eastern euro standup fighter.

As i recall 70's Jr welter Champ Saensak Muangsurin was at one point compared to Monzon, he beat Mamby, Brooks and Ishimatsu, but lost his title and fell away quickly, in a short up and down Career
(there is probably an intersting story concerning the Rise and fall of Saensak ? )

Its one of the most unusual styles in boxing, the 'tall attacker' - superficially Pavlik is in that mould, though Monzon had a little more subtlety, Pavlik could grow into a Monzon like fighter, hes worth the hype.

Vitali Klitschko is a very interesting pick, never really thought of it before.

True. I'd put him 2 class levels below Monzon but style wise they are similar if one looks past the class differential.
