What fights does frankie gavin need to prepare him for a world title fight

Cook then Theopane... Olusegun... Kotelnik then the world title

I said those fighter who are likely to face Gavin and who Frank will manage to negotiate with

 

In an ideal world:

Jason Cook
Barry Morrison
Nigel Wright
Lenny Daws
John Murray/Paul McCloskey

Then fight for a title. Maybe a tune up or two thrown in there.

 

Kotelnik is a good call, he's got the kind of style that Frankie will look good against.

I don't think Frankie is ready for Kotelnik yet, but in 18 months - 2 years should be perfect.

 

IMO he would take Koteknik now the problem with that is after that fight hes at that level where every fight is a dangerous fight at this early stage for him. John Murray is a lightweight and gets stood on his head by Frank anyway imho.

 

He needs more than 5 fights thats for sure. The only issue you can have with Frankies progression so far is lack of fights.

If they cannot nail down Theophane or the Commonwealth just go straight to European level. A lonsdale belt is a nice thing to have but once he has beat Jason Cook why would he need to fight Daws & Morrison. If your not moving forward your standing still. Offer decent money to the Guiseppe Lauri vs Dennis Shafikov for the European.

July 23rd Khan is fightign Tim Bradley. Judah is also looking for a big fight. That means by the end of the year allot of titles will be vacant. So the guys at top of the rankigns will all be fighting for vacant belts. Frankie needs to make sure he is in a position to be in eliminators at the beggining of 2012. If you think fighting Daws, Morrison etc will a) get him mentally and physically ready and b) ranked high enough your crazy.

 

Arnie i saw the 2 of them together at the prizefighter in London. Frankie absolutely dwarfed him , looked a few divisions bigger. Do you see him fighting at 140 in 2 years ?

 

Domestically, I think fighting both Theophane and Wright would put Gavin in good stead. Theophane will have the stamina, experience and work rate to keep Gavin on his toes for the duration and Wright, for my money, is one of the most underrated operators domestically. Wright is a good boxer with experience and is usually a test for everyone he has fought. Would provide Gavin with a style different to Theophane which would help his development.

After that he could move on to Euro/World stage I feel. He has the experience of the amateurs and we've all seen how good his transition to the pros has been. Just needs that experience of getting more accustomed to the 12 round distance. The Lomax fight showed he can, but that was against an opponent that wasn't really putting it on him and Gavin could dictate the pace. A fighter like Theophane would certainly help in this aspect I feel.

Cherry, Herrera, Prescott etc. all good opponents before the true step up to world class. And as already mentioned, Kotelnik would be a good world class opponent to face. His style is made for Gavin in my opinion.

 

I'd like Wright next.

He's got a bit of everything and won't just fall over.

After that..... get him against a tough Mexican in the States, then see what the landscape is.

I wouldn't necessarily go off chasing titles in the next 12 months, it's about getting the right fights to move him into world class.
