IIRC, Holmes agreed to fight Coetzee twice … once in South Africa and once in Las Vegas. In both cases the money evaporated and the fight was called off before it was officially announced.

Bottom line, both guys wanted to be paid and nobody could secure the financing.

First Ring magazine I ever bought (at a grocery store while on vacation at the beach) was the August 1979 edition.

Cover story: Fights you want to see

    Listed:

    Larry Holmes vs. Muhammad Ali

Matthew Saad Muhammad vs. Victor Galindez

Roberto Duran vs. Jose (Pipino) Cuevas

Hugo Corro vs. Marvin Hagler (I think they just wanted Marvin to get his shot more than any thought it would be a classic)

    Wilfred Benitez vs. Ray Leonard

Obviously a few of these happened and by the 1980s a few were moot, but this is the cover of the No. 1 boxing magazine in the world less than six months before the start of the decade so it’s a pretty good indication of what matchups were in demand.

Mine was a purchase downtown Boston grocery store. Have times changed...I think I still have that one.... Hugo vs. Marvin.? Hagler never got the respect until he beat Hearns.
