After sparring a 20 year old amateur prospect called Anthony Joshua, the then 22 year old pro Tyson Fury called up boxing journalist Steve Bunce. "I just went down to Finchley Boxing Club and sparred the ABA champion Anthony Joshua. He's red hot him, very good. "To be honest with you I thought 'I'll only take it easy because he's only an amateur and he probably wont spar me again if I go mad'. "He rushed out at me, he threw a one-two and left hook and bash, he hit me with an uppercut right on the point of the chin. "If I'd had a weak chin like David Price I'd have been knocked out for a month. He's very, very, very good and he's only young. Watch out for that name, Anthony Joshua, he is one prospect for the future. "I'm a good prospect, I rate myself as one of the top heavyweights in the world and he came at me for three rounds and he gave me a beating. I am not going to deny it. He gave what for, hell for leather. I thought an amateur is killing me. "I slowed him down with a few good body shots. The kid is only 20. I'm a handful myself, so for him to put up a good performance like that against a top prospect in me, I think he's one for the future. Forget all the Twitter and Instagram talk, this was Fury’s genuine reaction to being in a ring with a novice Anthony Joshua. While both are obviously better fighters today, Tyson Fury knows that fighting Joshua for all the belts will be no easy task, he knows that Joshua ain’t no Wilder https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/boxing/55308706
Of course. Most people with boxing sense know AJ is a quality fighter. And Tyson has an immense amount of boxing sense. Doesnt surprise me he was that good 10 years ago.
I think that’s clearly explained in the article, however to this day it remains Fury's ONLY direct point of reference and his informed opinion having spent time in a ring with Joshua.
Who has improved more over the last 10 years? "This was early on when I was an amateur and I didn't know who Tyson was. "I was reading in Boxing News This content is protected "Me and him had a straight war. We both have heart" Fury is a different breed.
From that day forward Joshua has probably improved more! As Tyson often says, fighting is in his blood, he was born fighting and has been fighting all his life, it’s the traveller way! It’s logical therefore to surmise that Tyson’s fighting skills were well honed by the time he was a 22 year old professional. Joshua on the other hand only started boxing in his late teens and was still a raw 20 year old amateur at the time of that sparring session. Since then he’s had a glittering amateur career and won multiple Heavyweight Belts. Again, it’s completely logical to conclude that Joshua has learned more and improved more since their 3 round face off. Tyson was also a 22 year old fully matured man while Anthony was a gangly and physically immature kid. I like your addendum to the Tyson quote as it displays the mutual respect and genuine regard they have for each other’s ability.
Improved more, maybe. Improved enough, not so sure. 'But sparring aint fighting, and fighting with a head guard on is not professional boxing' Fury also said that in the same interview but I guess the BBC didn't want to dilute the impact and left it out. That said, I'm sure I've read somewhere Fury quoted from years ago saying he knew AJ would be his biggest test...
This is quite a sad video, I’m upset that you posted it! You can clearly see the beginnings of Tyson’s mental problems here!
He may have mental problems but at least he doesn't have quitting problems. To be the HW champ of the world and walk back to your corner and spit your mouth piece on the ground after getting dropped is disgraceful behavior, and mark my words it will absolutely happen again when he gets chin checked. AJ is a quitter and will always be a quitter.
And why you don`t introduce yourself a one "no quitter" to all of us ? How s...... you got to be to said that a 2x Wolrd Champions is a quitter. You don`t get to that level, being a quitter. There is so many times and places where you can say i have enough, i`m done and just, and just be a regular boxer. The really top, top fighters are there, not only because of their talent, but the insane hard work they have to put to get there. They work way more than most of the other fighters, and esp. Joshua, he is a training machine. Only a forum troll can say a AJ is a quitter. Cause he don`t know how hard is it to get every single day and to know that you need to go to the gym and bust ***** ***. To literally go to the limit of your strengths every single day. And how hard is it to come back after that hard loss against Ruiz. Should i even mention the diet and all the routine you need to follow in your life?
Saw a whole bunch of AJ's fangirls on YT the other day getting their knickers all in a twist about Fury's statement after the Pulev fight but I thought it was hilarious. Tyson just says whatever he feels at the time. One minute he's laying into you like you're his worst enemy, the next he's praising you to high heaven. I don't know why people take him so seriously. Just fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the ride on the gypsy rollercoaster because he's pure entertainment. ''Well there you go everyone Anthony Joshua just shat hisself live on television. He got asked if he wanted the fight and he went around the bushes and he put his ass in the hedge'' It runs in the family This content is protected
