What great fighter did Joe Calzaghe beat?

His best wins are over a weight-drained Chris Eubank and a 43 year old Hopkins. Besides that, he defeated fighters like Mario Veit, Sakio Bika, and Robin Reid.
Why do some people consider him as one of the best purely based on talent alone? He has the worst pedigree of all the champions and fought poor competition....
To be really considered as one of the best ever you need talent, heart and fight the best contenders available.

See, I can play this game too. :D

With Calzaghe and especially Jones it's more about the style they won in, than who they beat.

You give Roy no credit for wins over Bernard and Toney?
Sure Roy could have fought better opposition but this can be said for a lot of fighter's past and present.

He beat Toney, Hopkins (B-Hop went on to be one of the elite ATG MWs), and i just give him the first Tarver fight, you dont win rounds by flurrying for the last few seconds of them!!

if you look at alot o fthe fighters Jones beat especially at LHW they went on after losing to him to be near the top of the division. he just made his comp look like journymen it doesn't make it so however.

Wow, he beat a lot of good fighters and a couple of great fighters in Toney and Hopkins. By the way, Hopkins was a number one contender to most of the belts for a long period of time. No one wanted to give him a crack at a title for some reason. He then got a chance to fight Roy for the IBF.

Jones beat: Thomas Tate, former champ, Eric Lucas, former champ, McCallum, former champ, Griffin, former champ (twice), Hill, former champ, Vinny Paz, former champ,Otis Grant, former champ, Gonzalez, former champ, Woods, future champ, Tarver, reigning champ, Ruiz, former champ, Reggis and Glenn Johnson, former champs, and also tough competition in Harding, Telesco, Sosa, Brannon, and Thornton.

Fat Joe, you are wise and perceptive beyond your post-count and certainly beyond the two dilettantes who are casting aspersions on the resumes of two ATGs.

Calzaghe is the second best boxer in the game today.

His resume is very good. Not outstanding but very good.

Jones WAS the best of his era. His resume WAS outstanding.

In addition, as you rightly point out, it was the way they dispatched their opponents that sets them apart as much as who the overcame.

That is especially true of Roy, who, in his prime, made elite level fighters look like drunken amateurs.

    Keep on postin', dude !

You know what great fighters RJ faced. Your motive operandi is to draw parallels between RJ's resume and Calslappy's resume. There is no comparison. :-(

Yup. Who else, for a start, could have KO'ed Thomas Tate in 2 rounds, Montell Griffin in 1 round, Virgil Hill in 4 rounds and schooled a prime James Toney for 12 rounds? Name another fighter that started his career at middleweight that could have done anything like that. There are none other.

Alot of dam good fighters and **** it I have time on my hand ill go thru the qualifications of a good number of his opponets.

TKO 1 Jorge Vaca - Former WBC Welterweight Champ(ill admit shot and well above his best weight)

UD Jorge Castro - Went on to hold the WBA Middleweight title for awhile and Jones shut his ass down.

UD Bernard Hopkins - Future record setting Middleweight Champ and Light Heavyweight King, Jones beat his clearly with a injured hand, How was Hopkins green ? He had over 200 amateur fights and actually had more pro fights and rounds then RJJ.

KO 6 Thulani Malinga - Future 2 time Super Middleweight Champion even beat Nigel Benn who Roy was claimed to have ducked.

UD (shutout)James Toney - 3 divison World Champ, was ranked number 2 p4p heading into the fight. Take your weight drained excuse and **** off James Toney never even uses the excuse its his fans. He had already moved up in weight class and this was 2 p4p top 10 fighters fighting, unbeaten vs unbeaten,Champ vs Champ,PPV fight theres no reason he should be so high in weight heading into a fight that big and if it was thats what seperates Jones and Toney COMMITMENT.

TKO 6 Vinny Pazienza - 2 divison World Champ that Roy made look like a club fighter. Although I admit Vinny was WAYYY above his best weight.

TKO 12 Eric Lucas - Future WBC Super Middleweight Champion.

UD Mike McCallum - Former 175,160,154 Champion and a member of the HOF.

KO 1 - Montell Griffin - Unbeaten Light Heavyweight Champ who had already beaten Jones and twice James Toney.

KO 4 - Virgil Hill - 2 time Light Heavyweight Champ and defended those titles a combined 20 times and went on 2 capature 2 Cruiserweight Champions after this fight.

UD Lou De Valle - Not a world beater but he did own the WBA 175 title so you cant blaim Jones for unifying the titles.

TKO 10 Otis Grant - WBO Middleweight Champ at that time.

UD Reggie Johnson - Current IBF Light Heavyweight Champion and former WBA Middleweight Champion.

TKO 10 Eric Harding - Unbeaten prized prospect coming off solid wins over Antonio Tarver and Montell Griffin.

UD Julio Cesar Gonzalez - Future WBO Champ beating Darius Michaelwski the linear Champion.

TKO 6 Clinton Woods - Future IBF 175 Champion.

UD John Ruiz - 2 time Heavyweight Champion.

UD Antonio Tarver - 4 time Light Heavyweight Champion.

UD Felix Trinidad - 3 divison World Champion.

You can pick apart these wins anyway you want but you can do the same with any fighter even current love childs Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto. On RJJs resume I count 4 certain HOFers Tito,McCallum,Hopkins,Toney and possibly others in Tarver and Hill. I also counted 18 current, past, future World Champions 10 of which won titles atleast twice. Roy Jones has a dam good resume anyone who says anything else is either A a hater or B just plain retarted.

To say Roy jones doesnt have a great resume is a complete joke, he beat the fighters around that will be considered ATGs in Hopkins and Toney, but also look at how many fighters won world championships before jones out classed them, how many fighters were world champion WHILE he was outclassing them then look at how many fighters went onto win world titles after he outclassed them - Jones's resume is immense, the problem is he beat guys so comprehensively, guys like Woods, Griffin, Hill, Gonzalez etc were called bums when quite obviouslly they were not!

Also his downfall was quick and shocking. but lets not forget after winning the WBA heavyweight title, he did come back to 175 and succesfull defeat Antonio Tarver before losing to him, and that Jones was clearly drained!
