You could argue Toney was more skilled, but he wasn't more versatile imo.

Toney's style had its limitations, like if you kept it at longe range, used the stick, were disciplined & consistent enough with that game plan, you could give him issues, which is why, although past his best, Oquendo, Rahman 1 gave him issues, infact arguably beat him.

James Toney like most counter punchers, needs to draw you into mid range to counter, which is why he moves his head so much, he invites you to try and hit him, then when you miss, become preoccupied with trying to hit him, and found out you have ended up standing infront of him instead of maintaining your distance, your in range to be countered.

Roy Jones exploited 3 facets of Toney's defense, one, that he does have issues when you keep it long, two, that if you get off the shoulder and triple the left hook the way Roy was doing, he bends into it, as his Philly shell is designed to bend to the right, three, that when you get off first like Roy was doing, that Toney's first method for defending himself, is to go into his crouch, only he can counter punch straight away when he has just slipped into his crouch, which is why when Roy got off first, whether he landed with his lead left hook or not, he was able to mount offense when he found himself on the other side of Toney, as Toney was still in a crouch position from just trying protect himself.

Floyd Mayweather is a better allround fighter cause he has a better longe range game and great legs, not only that, he can do everything Toney can do, only as I say, whilst not being as good as Toney is from mid range/inside, his allround game makes him more versatile cause he can do it all, as appose to excel at one particular style.

I don't agree with this. I am talking Toney at his best not the one that fought Rahman, Oquendo and Jones.

I don't see Toney's style limited to counterpunching. At his best Toney was very effective at leading too.

so really Toney is supposed to fight in January? wouldn't surprise me if January came and went and nothing happened

and regarding the other champs "ducking" Toney, wasn't it pretty widely publicised that Wlad Klitschko was trying to get a fight vs Toney but the IBF refused to sanction it ... you can't blame that on Wlad since Toney hasn't fought a single boxing match this year.

if the guy seriously wanted to fight the Klitschko's he'd be in the ring.
