Jeffries had made up his mind to come back long before he formally signed for the fight ,he went into secret training and on a strict diet. Sam Berger suggested he start sparring and exhibitions but once he announced he was coming back extremely lucrative offers were placed in his lap to do vaudeville, he made as much from these as he did from the actual fight. His choice.
Not saying anything else. Just saying that a 35-year old coming back from such a long inactivity will in most cases be way removed from his prime.
I have taught you much about this fight. First, you said Johnson didn't lose more than a round. FALSE Second I told you Johnson hired Jeffries former trainer. You thought it was a lie. WRONG AGAIN! Do you remember these conversations??? Why is your memory so bad? Johnson himself said he did not go in for a finish until the final rounds. DUH. These are his quotes, so this he could have ended it whenever is BS, he wasn't taking chances until Jeffries tired. Why don't you actually watch the film? You remain an idiot of the highest order, and yes, the way fights were scored back then combined with the climate, this fight could have been a draw if it was only ten rounds. The first ten rounds were pretty slow. Johnson took over in the final rounds, 13-15 in particular. Show me the quote in context, " I could not lick him at my best. " It's a lie. Jeffries clearly said right after the fight in context, if he was younger he would have won. It's clear to read. Not the fabrication BS you can't produce. If I wanted to build Jeffries up, I'd make Johnson better. I don't play those games, I leave them to Frazier fans who think Foreman was much better than he was to rationalize the blowout.
If they did they lied day in and day out which is possible but I think it is more than that .. he underperformed in Reno based on his shape and conditioning and I'm pretty sure the combination of the altitude nd the drying out took a final toll on him ... Ali was chemically unfit for Homes and managed to fight better against Berbick a year later ..
"Why don't you actually watch the film?" Not directed at me, but how many rounds actually exist today? I phoned the National Film Registry about that, and they told me they had 1, 4, 12, and 15. The British Film Institute also has the 13th & 14th. Which rounds have you seen? If the National Film Registry is correct, we would be limited to seeing two of the first 11 rounds, so it would be hard to judge how the fight developed off the film rather than ringside reports. I admit this could distort surviving footage towards Johnson who clearly came on from the 12th on.
"Stanley Ketchel and Billy Miske, after visiting the Jeffries camp both came away convinced Johnson would win." Billy Miske? He would have been 16 at the time of the fight in 1910. Did you perhaps mean someone else?
Jeffries looked toned he had ridges of muscle on his stomach ,he said he was in good shape ,maybe the pressure and tension got to him? Good point about Ali.
Ive seen what is available,I first viewed in on Super 8mm when I bought a Johnson compilation in the 60's.I go by the numerous contemporary newspaper round by round reports in Pollack's book.Anyone know of a better source?
That footage, if its Jeffries sparring with his brother and skipping rope for the Ruhlin fight, isn't run at the correct speed.
I agree the outcome was not representataive of how a prime for prime fight would have unfolded.Though I think the winner would still have been Johnson.
Well, I have seen the rounds listed by the NFR (1,4,12,15) & the extra two the BFI has (13 & 14). The question was directed at Mendoza. I would like to know if there are other rounds available. He seems to imply there are.
