i remember a time when world title fights could and would be held any day of the week (by this I mean from Sunday to Thursday, Friday in this sense counts as a weekend day to me) I think Moore-Duran was on a Wednesday, and Hagler-Duran was on a Thursday. Hagler-Hearns was on a Monday i believe but it was a holiday so i kinda not include it. Then you had Tuesday Night Fights, Wednesday Night Fights on ESPN. Small shows for sure but they kept our appetite whet as aperitifs before the main cards came on Saturday, at least. Heck even Friday boxing has all but disssappeared. Pryor-Arguello I and 2 and Gomez-Pintor and Benitez-Hearns were all held on a Friday. What happened to all that?
Greed killed it and the general populace becoming “softer” as a society (viewing boxing as violence instead of sport) put the nails in the coffin.
I remember it changing around the mid or late 90s? A lot of those big fights in the late 80s/early 90s were on weekdays. Big weekend fights seemed like they were Friday instead of Saturday. Leonard-Hagler: Monday, April 6, 1987 Tyson-Spinks: Monday, June 27, 1988 Leonard-Lalonde: Monday, November 7, 1988 Leonard-Hearns 2: Monday, June 12, 1989 Leonard-Duran 3: Thursday, December 7, 1989 Tyson-Ruddock 1: Monday, March 18, 1991 Holyfield-Foreman: Friday, April 19, 1991 Tyson-Ruddock 2: Friday, June 28, 1991 Holyfield-Tyson 1: originally scheduled for Friday November 8, 1991 Bowe-Holyfield 1: Friday, November 13, 1992 I guess they figured it was best for business to have it on Saturdays. Especially when near casinos, you get high rollers to come in for the weekend.
