Can someone tell me why there are so many excuses and smoke around Dempsey's career?

Was he out of the ring for more than 20 seconds vs Firpo, the film is edited!

Did he load his gloves vs Willard with something, not in his hand wraps?

Did he go low vs Sharkey to win ( Yes )?

Could Tunney have gotten up on a normal count ( I think so )

Did he throw the fight vs Flynn ( Highly doubtful )?

Did he fight Jack Johnson ( Highly doubtful )

Could he have fought Wills outside of the USA ( I think so )

This is fairly common in fights viewed by multiple eye witnesses.

It is often very difficult to establish what sort of punch ended Sullivan's fights.

I think he got back in the ring just fine vs Firpo. And continued to slaughter him.

No I don’t believe his gloves were loaded.

Yes I do believe he hit Sharkey with a low blow. However I do believe he was in that fight regardless.

Yes I believe Tunney could of beaten the count.

Did he throw fight vs Flynn. I agree doubtful

Did he fight jack Johnson (no imo)

Could he have fought Wills. I don’t know. But I believe style wise he makes pretty quick work of Wills.

There' a ton of smoke around his career. You know it and so do I, but just to Clarify, Flynn TKO 1 over Dempsey!

1 ) He was helped back in to the ring, technical a DQ, and the film is highly edited!

2 ) Williard suffered a lot of damage. He found a bolt of metal in the ring, and kept it his life. The Wraps are fine, perhaps the gloves were not. We'l' never know, but Dempsey ran out of the ring after round one, thinking Willard was finished. Why?! I think Willard was too old and rusty to win.

3 ) Hit hit him low, then sucker punch him when Sharkey was talking to the ref. Without the low blow, he's likely losing that fight. He was behind

4 ) Agreed Tunney could have beaten the count. Tunney by the way offered a 3rd fight, Dempsey refused. Had this been a 15 round fight, Tunney likely finished Dempsey, who needed help to find him to shake hands after the final bell.

5 ) Agreed, Johnson vs Dempsey was a fake news fight

6 ) Yes, he could have fought Wills in other venues. I agree, Dempsey likely beats him.

How do you know this? Can you see the ref's fingers's on the count? The film is edited, and I find it odd the camera pans away from the action when Dempsey is out of the ring...well at least the film does.

If Dempsey beat the count ( I tend to think he did ) , he was certainly helped back into the ring, which under rules is a DQ.

Either way, you can make a solid case Firpo should have been the champion, with a re-match ordered.

I pretty much agree with 4,5,6
The other points are debatable with me,

    1. I think any disqualification of Dempsey in the heat of that battle would of been following the letter of the law to a detrimental effect on the bout. I don’t know if he did or did not receive assistance, but he was half pushed out of the ring on the follow through, clearly was not hurt enough to be finished and would of robbed wildly estastic paying customers of what turned out to be one of the great fights of all time. I think the non call (if their was even reason to make a call) was for the betterment of the sport and entertainment as a whole. Wanting a Dq in that situation to me seems like nit picking to get a desired result other than what actually transpired in the ring.
    2. Interesting piece about Willard saving the metal, and I will say this his injuries in some of those up close photos are gruesome and very rare to be seen in boxing, but it’s not enough. The metal could of come from anywhere a fan could of tossed it into the ring. As for Dempsey leaving the ring I have no issue. Sounds conspiratorial to read into it.
    3. The Sharkey bout, Sharkey was in the lead. But to me the bout was 50/50 going forward. I didn’t like Sharkey’s body language and he was having a terrible time trying to keep Dempsey off him in the previous round. Sharkey was quick but he didn’t possess Tunney’s boxing abilities with his legs. He genuinely begins to look frustrated with how Dempsey continuesly darts into him with his chin down clubbing away at his body. Like he can’t escape and he doesn’t have the artillery to deter his opponent. I really enjoy this fight.

Since Dempsey and Tyson had similar styles, you think Flynn could've stopped Tyson in 1 circa June 27, 1988?
