Last I heard he was coming off some comeback wins, then out of nowhere he went into politics... which he didn't win. So the question is, where is he?

Yea, he did come back and win a couple of fights after the layoff due to the medical reason but he never fought anyone of note after Jirov. He's 36 now I think and past it, also too small for today's heavyweight division. He probably saw the writing on the wall after having to hold on just to bea Jirov. Even at his best Im pretty sure either Klit, Haye, Arreola, Peter, maybe even Chambers would beat him quite easily.

i dunno. he was a decent boxer and a great guy. it was a sad end to a promising career, and one less quality heavyweight is not what we need right now.

It's good he retired....cause any top 10 heavyweight would do a number on him...look at the Jirov fight...and he was not even top 10.

Mesi's a really smart, articulate guy. It's always suprised me that he didn't go into broadcasting. He'd be a natural.

Mesi was beating Jirov from pillar to post in that fight and got nailed by a rabbit punch. The "great" James Toney had a lot more problems with Jirov than Mesi did.

If you look at how weak a lot of guys in the top 10 have been lately, it seems silly to say that any top 10 fighter would beat him. Sure, he wasn't a top level fighter (I thought he lost to Monte Barrett), but he was no worse than people like Ibragamov and Maskaev.

Mesi would be better at the commentary table than in the ring. He's not very good and age, inactivity and injury certainly screwed him over.

I agree with everything up to the part where you compare Mesi to Maskaev & Ibragimov. Joe was never on their level since he never had a belt. I also think Baby Joe edged Barrett in their fight but it was close.

Does the fact that someone has a belt make them a better fighter? I don't think so. Look at who they had to beat to get those belts. If he fought the right fight, I think Mesi could have beaten Briggs or Rahman, although they both would have stood a good chance of knocking him out.

mesi was good. really unfortunate ending to his career, he was almost ready for a title fight. good power but lacking a bit on the technical bits. remember that two hand punch he threw against barret? still thought he took it by 1 point due to the kd. Im sure he would of beaten rahman had he got the shot.
