What happened to Jones? I heard two years ago that he was shot.

Ridiculous. Roy outboxed tarver in the first fight. If it was anyone other than RJJ, it would be plain to see, but because it was mroe competitive than his usual washouts, suddenly tarver takes the fight? For the record, NONE of the three judges had it for tarver. One had it a draw, the other two for Jones, and lederman had it 116-112 Jones.

It is still unbelievable to me that all of the posters called RJJ "shot" just two years ago and now he fights in MSG in one of the biggest fights of the year. It shows what kind of experts there are.

    i am in total agreement
i think its a much more mental/psychological thing than people are making it out to be

in that 3rd tarver fight, watch round 5 and tell me roy jones was PHYSICALLY shot... sure he was older and more faded (to use a term another poster stated) but most of his skills were intact...

but roy has never had that heart or instinct or whatever you want to call it except in flashes (he called it "RJ" and the last time he brought it out was for the 2nd griffin fight)... you can just tell by his demeanor and the way he acts in public that the guy just doesn't have the heart for it

and calzaghe say what you want about his skills (i personally can't stand the SHAM he's pulled on most of the boxing public) but the guy has heart... and that will be the difference in the fight, not skill

btw: i want to add that i think what happened to mcclellan had a PROFOUND impact on roy as a person AND as a fighter... he never really wanted to hurt anyone after that or more importantly be hurt himself

People have always gone over-the-top, one way or another, when evaluating Roy.

First, after he beat Ruiz, he was the undisputed #1 greatest fighter in the world, one of the absolute greatest fighters of all time, nobody can touch him.

Then after the Glen Johnson fight (only about a year later), the very SAME people were saying, "Roy's been shot all this time, done, finished. His prime was ages ago." :patsch

Then he wins a few fights, and suddenly he's a legit top tier fighter and is worthy of a shot at Calzaghe for the unofficial light-heavyweight title. Those losses to Tarver and Johnson just a couple years earlier apparently never happened.

    Whatever! :think

    1) He's not fighting the number 1 in the world.
    2) Jones has been shot for years now.
    3) If Jones was 1% of what he once was the piece of garbage he's set to fight would never sign to fight him as was proven back when Jones was in his prime with Calzaghe's endless excuses to avoid it.
    4) He said on a show before the Hopkins fight that he would never fight Jones because he's beyond shot, then after he signed to fight him he claims it's ridiculous to say Jones is shot.
    5) Funny how he has no issues traveling to the States for big fights all of a sudden when everyone worth mentioning is beyond shot.

Agreed 100%. He had no excuse for quitting like he did in the third Tarver fight.

Jones was never "shot," not physically anyway. Jones had his confidence smashed into a million pieces after the Tarver/Johnson incidents. Roy has had to learn to walk again spiritually, mentally, and psychologically. It's been a slow process, but he's made steady improvement. He is not however 100% healthy yet. Roy was still showing overt signs of his condition in the Trinidad fight. He's pushing himself very quickly and dramatically back into the belly of the beast by fighting Calzaghe. In a lot of ways it's a huge con job by Roy Jones. He's doing what he did in Tarver III, and that's willing himself to be ready. But is he actually ready yet? He wasn't for Tarver III, we know that.

If he beats Calzaghe people will say "I told you so. Jones is the greatest but if he loses those same people will say I told you so Roy is shot"

    There's shot and there's shot...

RJJ is "shot" in terms of there being an obvious decline in his performances.

RJJ was unhittable for most of his career. His reflexes are no longer nearly as good (let's face it, he can't have the reflexes at almost 40 that he did at 30 or even 35). His ability to execute on landing punches in bunches is virtually non-existent. He's just a much different fighter. The bounce in his legs is gone, and so on.

The only reason why RJJ is fighting Calzaghe is because of name recognition. The only reason why RJJ is still competitive with people, is because at one time, he was unbeatable.

    Superman simply became a contender...

Well . . . he is still shot. What do you expect?

Are you expecting the guy to revert to his prime?
