I know the whole AIDS story, I never saw him fight though. How good was he ? And what is he doing now ?
He looked like he had great potential and could have been a world champion for sure. He had good power, he lost to Reggie Johnson but put up a good fight. Oh yeah i think he was scheduled to fight McClellan sometime around '94 but Lamar caught teh HIV.
I was young when he was fighting, a top 10 middleweight gets HIV, but I do a web search not a lot comes up. In 1994 I would have thought a story like this would have been a bit more of a media circus.
*** Here's a cool fact, in 1992 Reggie Johnson was one of the middleweight champions by defeating Steve Collins. Reggie Johnson wanted to make his first title defense against Roy Jones. But at that time Lamar Parks was Reggie's number one contender for the title and refused to step aside. Would have been a great fight, i think. They talk about this during the Parks/Johnson fight. **** Parks was also offered $50,000 just to step aside so Johnson and Jones could get it on but still refused. Lamar Parks was a good hungry young fighter during that time.
That was a great Middleweight class in the early 90's. Toney, Nunn, McCallum, Kalambay, Jackson, Johnson, Jones Jr., McClellan, Parks, Hopkins. I said GAWDAMN!!! Lamar Parks had potential, great potential.
Yeah that's some crazy talent right there. I have to say as well Roy Jones fought the two best fighters of that lot and beat them decisively Hopkins and Toney. So people should get off Roy's back.
I think Parks caught the spit from his bee-yatch in the early 1990s... I also think she died from AIDS later on.... Yes, its been a long 15 years since I last recollected about Parks... I have no clue what he looks like or his condition in 2011.... He never made big bucks in the ring... atsch:roll: MR.BILL:admin:deal
It wasn't his regular girl that gave him AIDS, just going by a 1995 article though. Parks trainer says she was faithful to Parks (Parks was often seen with other girls though) and was still a virgin when she hooked up with Parks. I guess I'll never know why there wasn't a media circus in 1994 over this story ( which is a good thing, lack of circus). It would be interesting to know how parks is doing now and what he is doing. Wouldn't some low level back woods sports reporter have time for a sit down to talk to parks in 2011 ?
No media circus in '94 is easy to understand...... Parks was never a star of boxing; just a rising contender.... No Rock Hudson or Magic Johnson material there..... bart MR.BILL
Lamar is in Greenville as trainer. I was working with him before I hurt my back again. He is a great trainer. He has put on some weight since his good old days but still has a hard punch.
The articles I read about him back in the mid 90s and what he did, was a little disturbing and extremely despicable. https://www.poz.com/article/Down-for-the-Count-1836-6490
He's done well to survive till now. I remember reading an interview with him, he talks about how frail he felt with H iv. This was back when Hiv was seen as a death sentence, and that interview seems like a life time ago.
Remember him from Tuesday Night Fights. Sad stuff, but, he did try to con his way back into fighting by switching blood tests, or something, if I remember correctly.
