I saw the first fight, Nate dropped his hands and got KTFO like a fool..I fully expected him to win the rematch. But he didn't. What went down?
I remember watching the second fight and thinking "Peden is just having a night to remember" Without looking it up ko in the 8th? cant be bothered to look it up but he just looked good that night. Havent seen Peden before or after look that good
yeah i remember seeing it on nothing but knockouts and it did not surprise me to see campbell do that because he was a little off back then IMO
My take on it... Campbell started stronger, seemed to hurt Robbie with some good shots in the 2nd and 3rd. Then Peden slowly wrestled the fight away from him, Robbie was on top at the time of the stoppage and slightly ahead from memory. He had busted up Nate's face a bit and was starting to maul him on the ropes. The ref did not do Campbell any favours though. He jumped on Nate for any infraction but seemed to allow Robbie to use his head with little recourse. Did this have a bearing on the fight? Quite possibly, as the damage to Campbell's face seemed to affect him. For the record the first fight wasnt what a lot of people tried to make out. Overall I dont think Nate was all over Peden in the first fight, he was just in control in that round and had won the previous round pretty clearly aswell. The first 3 seemed pretty close, Im pretty sure Robbie won at least one of them.
I just watched the second fight. Well, bits of it. It seemed that Peden really just won it on heart. I felt a little bad for campbell there, as everything was going wrong for him. Peden seems to be his curse. Then again Nate pretty much deserves what he got for the first fight. Sad.
Thats Nate Campbell for you, when he is hot he is red hot but when he isnt...well the disparity between the two Nate Campbell's is quite astonishing.
I watched the fight here in Australia. Campbell got an old school mugging, beat up and stopped on cuts, Peden out toughed him basically.
Yup ill never forget I think it was 05 he lost to some journeymen on ESPN in like July then in October he is destroying with ease may I add Kid Diamond who everyone thought was the next big thing at 140.
There's a poster here named The Mighty Bolo, and he's followed Nate's career. I asked him about the Campbell/Peden rematch about 1 month ago out of curiosity, as I've never watched it, and his desription of the fight pretty much resembles yours. Basically he told me Peden got away with some roughhouse tactics and headbutts, and all that took a toll on Campbell. PS: I enjoyed watching Peden get beat up by Ranee friggin Ganoy, I must say. :hey
:verysad I didnt..That was a little hard to watch actually. Robbie is a top bloke and very well liked among the more hardcore boxing fans in oz because he used to post on forums when he was living in the states. I do really like Ganoy though, good to see he has gone on from that win. Cant wait till his next one. Also dont get me wrong, Peden was starting to take over that fight because he just looked like a man on a mission, he could not discouraged. But I cant deny the fact that it was a rough fight at times that Robbie seemed to use to his advantage more then Nate.
As I haven't really watched Nate's past fights, and having the Juan Diaz fight in mind, I was actually shocked to see Campbell lose TWICE to this guy when I first checked his record. The first time of course was just his own idiocy, but the rematch I expected him to win!
There was something about Peden he looked quite average at times, still had some amateur hangups but he was an effective fighter. He could be quite awkward but he had quite decent technical skills. Very good am pedigree, dual Olympian. I didnt like his left hand being so low but against lesser opponants he could get away with it and it gave him the chance to be in a better punching position. Which actually was the case in the first fight. It testement to this guys toughness that though he was clearly very ill against JMM, he still lasted 10 rounds with him and acutally seemed to take some rounds off him. I was leaning toward Campbell in the rematch because at the time he was one of my favourite fighters. But I was certainly not suprised when Peden brang home the bacon, these guys were more evenly matched then people were willing to admit and I think Robbie showed that.
So you think it was just one of those "fighter A is better overall than fighter B, but fighter B has fighter A's number" cases?
Not exactly...If they fought ten times Nate would take some, maybe even more. It had a lot to do with the inconsistent nature of Campbell mixed with the sheer determination of Peden that let to these results. Thats boxing sometimes.
