I think that was when he was 19. Horrible experience if he is telling the truth. And it probably explains the whole Johnny Gill thing.
But I read another punch on an operated eye and you can go blind, why would he risk that, there`s no way of being sure damaging your retina twice is safe, being hit in the head is not what the head was designed for.
They did from what I remember from that time period. Guys with detached retinas back then were pretty much told they ran the risk of blindness if they continued fighting
As far as performance goes, it's kind of like being sparked cold. You can handle it like Lennox Lewis or you can handle it like John Tate. Knowing there's a risk is a mental thing.
OK, Ray fought one fight at welter after his first retirement and he was awful vs Howard, he was nowhere near the level he was at when he beat Duran in the 'no mas' fight, the rest of his fights were at light middle and higher, he was a lot slower in those fights.
Right, so I would assume that would have more to do with loss of passion and poor lifestyle than his eye.
leonard is one of the most overrated fighters. he just didnt prove me wrong when I bet against him and only took the Hagler fight when he was at the end of his career He didnt take the fight with Nunn but took a fight with lalonde after refusing a rematch with Hagler saying he'd never fight again? that proves my case. failed miserably with Norris, a fighter with real speed and completely outclassed doubly proving my case I can just imagine what Nunn wouldve done to him and it's not like he had 80 fights. he had a mere 38 fights going into the Norris fight but you all make excuses for him. he shouldve taken fights with Pryor 1983, and Curry, 1984- 85 and THEN he could build a case for real achievements but as for being one of the top five fighters in the last half of the century, save that for Roy Jones
There was suppose to be a Cuevas WW Title unification fight in Spring/Summer of 1980.....but SRL opted to fight the moving up Roberto Duran.
Leonard was an all time great. Good boxing skills, excellent power, excellent speed, great chin, big heart. But as a person he was pretty much a POS. Possibly the biggest ego of all time, giving Roy Jones Jr. a run for his money, till Roy started getting KOed most of the time.
Soul singer who joined the group New Edition after Bobby Brown got kicked out. Reportedly had a thing with Ray and comedian Eddie Murphy.
