    So. he mentally folded ?
Maybe. It's hard to tell what's going on in a fighter's mind though.

I wonder what he says about it in his autobiography ?

Accurate post Schmeling was even a bit past it for the first fight, he sprang an upset ,but could not duplicate it.He was a good champ, and a fine man, who got caught up in history.

In my opinion, Joe applied pressure and forced him backwards. Max could not fight on the backfoot. He could only fight forward.

    Elementary, my dear Watson...

Schmeling simply was past his very best by 1938, while Louis was just entering his peak yrs as a ringer and champion.... The age factor of nine long years played a role in '38...

Earlier in '36, Louis was hot, yet also green... Schmeling was only about age 31 at the time and still able to focus and whip his ass into great shape.... '36 was the last bit of whatever prime was left in Max's body...

Amazingly, Ol' Mad Max fought for another decade---winning and losing some decent fights....

Not just but it played a role. He talks about the pressure he was under but gave Louis full credit - which he deserves - and he never would do anything less. If I remember right. It´s been a while since I read it.

It was a number of factors. The pressure from the Americans - he couldn´t sleep or train probably in the US due to US protesting him and when he was on the way into the ring they threw like everything on him, I don´t think any fighter outside of JAck Johnson ever faced as much hatred on his way into the ring - the pressure from back home. And for something he wasn´t. That can do a number on you. Perhaps he threw it on purpose like somebody else said, but I doubt it. Would be totally out of character for him.
Then a prime Joe Louis who wanted revenge. Schmeling himself was past prime. The freak accident with the broken vertebrae (spelling?). And of course he never was in Joe´s class to beginn with.

    :thumbsup

That´s BS. Schmeling could fight going backwards. You see it at times in the Baer fight.

Louis was already peak in the first fight. Had his peak fight a year before against Baer.

Schmeling came only back for the money after WW2 and some of his wins are pretty shady and very likely fixed. He was spoken free from guilt there but the trial consisted of some of his firends and his manager ...

I really don't think Schmelling looked as quick of hand, foot or reaction, his legs looked less under him too. It was a short fight so hard to read too much into it but imo Schmelling was a faded force

If Lance Henriksen and SNV both talk about his skill as a director...Let's just say Boll is going over your head, probably, Bodhi, no offense.

You can fool him once, shame on you, fool him twice shame on him

and you aint gonna fool him again

Louis was the best at rematches, Marciano was also good but Joe did it time and time again

Not B.S. at all. Maybe he could fight backwards a little, but not well. I don't think he was expecting Joe to rush forward and unleash bombs like that.

If memory serves, U, Louis learned his lesson, and from the opening bell he moved forward, with his left much higher -- 'n kept it that way -- pumping multiple jabs, stepping closer, leaving Schmeling no room for his lethal right over the top.
