Joe knew to look out for the right counter.

Joe knew Max wanted to counter, and Joe showed great patience in working his way in gradually to the point that, if Max didn't lead, Joe's quick and compact punches would be coming in from so close that Max had virtually no time to react. And these compact punches stung plenty.

And when Max took the punch in his back, that was the begining of the end, and right to the body from that point was going to bring Max's left arm WAY down, if it wasn't already down.

Louis was 21 when he KO'd Baer in '35 and was only a pro for a year, as well.... Louis was not primed then.... Louis was still rising in 1935 and 1936..... Louis' prime was when he KO'd Braddock in '37 'til about 1942 when he KO'd Bud Baer in the rematch....

The left side of Schmelings body was a pressure fighter.

The right side was a defensive counterpuncher.

He was a chimera, like twho halves of diferent fighters sewn together!

If that were true, then I am sure Max would not have got verry far with his style.

    He totaly ate pressure fighters.

Look, I know Louis went through Mad Max in '35 like a hot knife whipping butter, but at age 21 and roughly a pro for a year or so, no way in hell was Joe Louis peaked... His style was still flawed with Louis dropping his left hand after jabbing... That flaw wasn't corrected until after getting parked by Schmeling in '36...
    :bbb
In truth, Joe Louis probably didn't hit is true physical prime until his '38 waxing of Schmeling.... And his fights with Buddy Baer before going into the Army was the ending of his true prime, as well...
    :yep
Louis was not the same in '46.....:-(

    WTF?:patsch

    Note:

I believe Joe Louis' birthday just past here last week... Joe Louis would be 97 years old today....
    :deal
Christ, I thought Louis looked 97 when he died in 1981 at age 67....:patsch:?:|

That late binge with cocaine caused havoc on him, he was an old 67 but think of some of his fights -Schmeling, Marciano,Galento,Walcott,Godoy,Baer,Baer, etc. and then think of Ali now about the same age...tough business boxing especially when you stay in beyond your time

In total honesty, he backed to the ropes, turned his body, and took such a heavy right hand to the kidney that all the fight left him, right there. Imagine a horrid body shot, then double the pain.

Fight was over off that one punch, Schmelings heart and thick head just let him take some rights flush to the jaw before it got waived. He gets credit for standing back up several times, but the fight was over after that sequence on the ropes.

Well, considering Schmeling in '38 was over-the-hill and that Bud Baer NEVER had any defense, okay, not much different... BUT! Again, I claim Louie to be primed from Braddock '37 to Buddy '42 anyway, or in around that frame...

As for '35, I contend Max Baer was not confident going in against Louie at that juncture.... He tried like hell for a round or three, but it was no good... Louie was too hot to trot and budding for Max Baer....

YET!!! ALRIGHT!!! Louis prolly could've won the title from Braddock even as early as '35.... I'll buy that....

louis had nothing but revenge and destruction on his mind. He told his cornermen that if he didn't knock schmeling out by the 3rd round to stop the fight because he would have nothing left.

The fact that louis fractured schmeling's spinal column gives a pretty good idea of how much force Joe put into those punches.
