Yeah, there was some buzz starting to build up around him at one point.

He was part of a young class that was supposed to be waiting in wings to eventually take over 168lb from the Super-6/Bute/Calzaghe generation.

    You had:

    • Shawn "Hands of Gold" Estrada (gone MIA & forgotten due to injuries)
    • Edwin "La Bomba" Rodriguez (went on a nice run with Rosinsky, George, Escalera, Maderna and Grachev - and has mounted what's shaping up to be another nice run since the loss to Ward - but found his level when he stepped up and is decidedly not upper-crust elite, just too lacking in versatility and other areas)
    • Marcus "Too Sharp" Johnson (hailed prematurely by the Showtime commentators as THE MAN to inherit the division, but gone bust in epic fashion when he failed at domestic level versus unspectacular Davis and later spanked by Oosthuizen)

...plus a few others, none of whom are currently relevant anymore.

I'm kind of sad things worked out the way they did with all those guys when they were young & on the way up with fire in their bellies.

There were some nice match-ups to be made pitting different combinations of Estrada, Rodriguez, Johnson and their peers (although, to be fair, we did get some double and triple-headers on ShoBox with these guys taking out solid opponents in their age bracket, like the Johnson vs. unbeaten Derek Edwards/Rodriguez vs. unbeaten Kevin Engel/Donovan George vs. Ozzie Adama card)

There was such a sense of hope and optimism for the division to became amazing back then, once the old guard started to shuffle off to either retirement or 175lb, and it was supposed to be all this fresh blood in a melee to fill the power vacuum. For various reasons that just didn't work out.

For reference, here were the Ring Mag top super middles (1-10, in order) for the years 2008-2010:

    Kessler/Bute/Andrade/Mundine/Taylor/Froch/Bika/Green/Inkin/Dirrell.
    Bute/Ward/Froch/Kessler/Bika/Abraham/Green/Andrade/Stieglitz/Gutknecht.
    Ward/Bute/Froch/Kessler/Dirrell/Bika/Stieglitz/Andrade/Glen Johnson/Abraham

Hardly anyone youthful in sight. All guys either smack in the middle of their primes, or exiting (or past) them, some of them quite old compared with the host of baby-faced prospects that was meant to be on the charge in those years.

I saw Johnson's fight against Oosthuizen and I'm very familiar with Rodriguez. Not sure how anyone could have such high expectations of Johnson going by what I saw of him against Oostuizen, although 'Tommy Gunn' looked pretty good in that one. I think Johnson had a decent amateur career IIRC though.

Rodriguez vs Rosinsky was quite controversial IIRC. I think Rodriguez won via very wide scorecards but it was ultra competitive and fiercely contested. Rodriguez impressed against Grachev though. He just jumped on him early and didn't let him off the hook. I've also seen his last two fights, the George one and the loss against Ward. I'm sure I've seen one or two of his earlier fights as well. His fight against Seals was great. I had a really strong feeling he was going to hit the canvas after dropping Seals in the first though. Seals is a huge LHW (he's come in as high as 212lbs before) and he can punch and Rodriguez was leaving himself wide open as he was looking for the finish.

Ridiculous that Bute wasn't invited to participate in the Super Six.

I started thinking Tommy might be the real deal based on the performance against Johnson on Showtime IIRC, quickly I was set straight by his abysmal performance against Brandon Gonzalez.:verysad

Yeah he was quite highly touted back then and he looked pretty impressive in all the fights of his I saw pre Gonzales. I'm sure that guy has got a drink problem though. He has the look of an alcoholic to me and I know he's had a lot of outside the ring problems regarding his weight and discipline as well.

 I've thought the same thing, he just has that look. He also looks like he should be a Lightweight but's just way too damn tall for the division.

He looked very youthful and fresh faced back then but he looks bloated and much older now. His body looks soft and undefined too. He's got a deceptively stout set of whiskers on him for such a tall guy though.

That usually happens to South Africans, they age very quickly, it quite distressing, the Swedish are very similar, they're beautiful until they're about 27 and then they wrinkle up and turn into old crones with sunspots and shoe leather skin by 35.:patsch

No I meant who do you prefer out of them in terms of hotness? I vote Theron but both were gorgeous in their primes.

She was absolutely stunning in her prime. Something about Theron really does it for me though. Even more than Ekland does which is a considerable amount.
