What happened to the peek-a-boo style?

Cus' patented style made famous first by Floyd Patterson and of course Mike Tyson. Is it a style that only works for some specific types of boxers? Why isn't it used much at all today?

Very few people can pull it off.

It's not easy to do. You need speed, power and good footwork

I think that style would beat Usyks style.

Who knows. The classic stick-and-move-merchant style is generally a very difficult one to beat.

Probably the trainers don't engage to develop their fighters in that style. But it can and will always be effective. Also, peek-a-boo is demanding, sure, but the problem with not seeing it is that it serves the smaller fighters to beat bigger guys, but in recent years there are not many heavies that are below 190 cm, even cruisers. While the style mostly applies to the big differences we can see in the heavier divisions.

How many fighters used it pre 90's? Very few.

The original master of the style died and his students aren't in the mix anymore (Rooney and the original crew). Kind of hard to accurately teach a style if you didn't learn from the OG, it's a difficult to learn, difficult to master style.

The other reason it isn't used as much today is because it's so physically demanding. You need to have incredible cardio and explosiveness to use it effectively you can't just half ass it or cruise through a fight using peak a boo or you'll get nailed. It's a style that demands you not only be in great shape, you have to be a gym rat sharpening your combos and getting your timing right. What this basically boils down to is you'll be a frightening opponent but all that grueling training shortens your career.

Khurtsidze still represents the peek-a-boo style, and he is out of jail now!

Isaac Cruz and Nick Ball seem to be the only boxers to currently employ the Tyson-esque peek a boo style, although obviously not as effective.

Mike Tyson was 5'10" fighting guys 6'3"+

It was the perfect style to knockout stiff upright taller men who were easy to slip and explode on.

Lower weight classes it's very rare to find matchups with a height disparity like this so commonly. Most fighters are roughly the same height.

It's a Cus D'Amato special and it's also a rather energy demanding style. Once Mike faded he was a static pudding. Cus knew Frazier would give Ali fits with his ability to slip and get inside on him given it shadows the peek a boo style Cus taught the later Michael Tyson or earlier Patterson.

That Peek-a-boo style likely died with Cus D'amato. Unless you can find a 6'2/6'3" specimen 220 pounds who can replicate it on modern heavyweights 6'6" and find a trainer capable of teaching it. The odds of that? nill.

America should be a HW boxing factory but all their talent goes into other sports. You've had Deontay Wilder and that's it over the decade+ and he relies on his GOAT'd power. Old school trainers for HW's in America are all but long gone and their stable of horses with them.

A good jab at distance and clinching up close as pretty much nullified it.

Abusing the clinch is against the rules of boxing.
