If you had been asked to stereotype an American fighter a few years ago, you probably would have mentioned attributes like hand speed, footwork, accuracy, determination, flashiness etc, which became an established stereotype because of fighters like Leonard, Whitaker, De La Hoya, Hearns and so on. Obviously there are always exceptions with stereotypes but there was a defined American style.

Looking at America's elite fighters though...what happened to that style? Has it been replaced by a dirty, spoiling style? Look at the elite American fighters:

Floyd Mayweather: Tremendously skilled but has run in fights. Has held, ducked too low, used his elbows illegally. Rarely brings a fight, like defensive fighters such as Whitaker did.
Bernard Hopkins: Effective but excessive holding and illegal spoiling tactics.
    Andre Ward: Excessive illegal tactics
Paulie Malignaggi: Runs in every fight
Andre Dirrell: Ran far too much against Froch and did everything to spoil the fight.
    Shane Mosley: I'm a huge fan...but steroids?
Andre Berto: Despite a huge advantage in skill against Urango, looked to spoil the fight at every opportunity
Nate Campbell: Quit against Bradley, shamelessly

There are American boxers who have a style that demands respect, but we are a long way away from the glory days of the typical stylish American pure boxer.

You mention "hand speed, footwork, accuracy, determination, flashiness etc" in the first line, then go on to make negative remarks about certain fighters on different criteria.

You're saying Floyd odesnt have handspeed and lacks accuracy?

Hopkins performance against Pavlik wasnt a determined one and that he wasnt agile and accurate?

You rate Mosley as lacking in determination and handspeed?

In fact nearly all those guys up there have great handspeed, and some have phenomenal speed!

Not criticising or anything but the thread idea seems a little thin.

Oh, I'm not saying that all those guys don't have great characteristics. I'm never going to deny that Mayweather has agility and hand speed but the American fighter, has, in my opinion, become typified for fighting negatively.

There isn't one other era in modern American boxing history, where the top talent they have produced, fight as bad as the American's have in this era.

You're an utter clown. Every fighter in the sport does illegal **** from time to time. You're just mad your hero Kessler got exposed by nothing more then a 25 year old prospect.

Stop crying like a *****. Clenching if you know boxng has been employed in the sport for 100 years. Gene Tunny(do you even know who that is dope?) made it into an art form.

Ward boxed KEsslers ears off. If not for a blatant robbery, Andre Dirrell is also taking home a strap. These are 2 young guys one with who hasnt even gone 12 rounds before, and he still made your best look like a clown.

Learn the ****ing sport, and stop making excuses

Dawson: No fouling, though not the most exciting fighter you'll ever see.

Pavlik: No fouling, even though he was exposed by Hopkins. Definitely will bring the fight.

    that would be...2 thumbs up

this so reminds me of evander holyfield kicking tysons ass the first time...tyson feasting on bums after he got out of jail..seldon, mathis jr, mcneely, then he fights a guy who aint going away by saying "boo" and he gets taken to school and spanked...then the bully wants to complain he got roughed up....man i love this.... i called it months ago...Ward easily wins....and kesslers *** fans would be crying foul over something..if it werent "butts" and would have went to the cards, it would have been the ref, or the judges, or jet lag, bunch of damn babies:rofl:rofl

You Euros need a better understanding of boxing. Here in the US all the fundamentals are exercised over and over again. All the top euro fighters besides the Klits dont know the difference between a right cross and a right hook.
Ricky Hatton-sucked balls and didnt know how to hit the mitts...nuff said
    Joe Calslappy-slaps for Gods sakes
Kessler- Robot Like and does the same **** for 12 rounds until his face swolls up
Carl Froch-Wow, if it wasnt for his conditioning I think he would break the record for most rounds lost by a tittle holder.

I'm not even a Kessler fan. I wasn't fussed that he lost. I put a bet on, Dirrell to win, that made me a decent bit of money, so I wasn't bothered. I was planning to go to Denmark to see Froch fight there but that probably won't happen now.

But yeah, I'm not a huge Kessler fan.

And Gene Tunney? I think you've got the wrong guy, mate  Tunney was a great boxer who utilized footwork and great modern fundementals. The first great modern heavyweight, in my opinion. Was he famous for his "clenching"? No, he wasn't. It's pure ignorance to say he was and then to accuse me of ignorance? Laughable.

If you didn't know I was right, you wouldn't turn this into a European and American thing. I didn't claim European fighters were any better, I was just pointing out the change in the last decade or so, which you can't deny, obviously.

What's all this "European" nonsense too? I have no allegiance to "Europe" and I'm sure 99% of other European boxing fans don't either. You can't class us all as one, because we are from one continent. It's stupid. I'm not going to start grouping Canadians and Mexicans in with you Americans.
