I thought the typical American style is to fight like Ali. Everytime I talk to people from another country about boxing, they think everyone down here fights like him xD
" His brilliant footwork, artful clenching, and well-timed right hand leads and jabs enabled Tunney to win all ten rounds on both judges' cards. It was the first time a heavyweight championship was won by decision and not a knockout. Tunney was the heavyweight champion, and the fans never loved Jack Dempsey more. " Its quite clear you've never seen Tunney fight especially not his fights with Dempsey, Sorry you know nothing about the sport. Ali used to ****ing hold Fraziers head down when the fought, so hard that you'd think he was trying to pull him to the ground. All great fighters have illegal tactics they employ from time to time. **** ITS A FIGHT. Get over it son. Learn the sport and then get over it.
Ill admit though I think alot of new school fighters are applying techniques similar to mayweather, hopkins, etc etc but because of how successful they are. This boxing game is changing. Nobody fights for legacy anymore its all about managing your career to get the most out of it. I think if Floyd and Pac fight and Floyd ends up winning, I think it will create exposure to this defensive style of boxing to a greater extent. But who knows all I know is the US has a great school of boxing.
I've seen all of Tunney's filmed fights but I realize that clinching was not a great asset of his. It's ridiculous to say it was. He was known for his upper body agility, footwork and overall movement. He was not great on the inside, unlike, say, Jack Johnson. Johnson turned it into an art form. Tunney turned footwork at heavyweight into an atm form. I couldn't care what some clipping says. Nobody with any knowledge is going to define Tunney as a clincher...sorry, "clencher". Dempsey clinched, yes. He was old school. Tunney was new school and got AWAY from excessive clinching.
I pretty much agree with that. I can't hate guys for using the right tactics, and please note my use of the word "effective" in this thread. I don't enjoy it, but can I blame a guy like Hopkins for using it? Definetly not. If I could be a world champion doing the same, I'd make John Ruiz look like Willie Pep.
I never said Tunney was a clencher. I said he turned it into an art form. Meaning he knew that if Dempsey landed he could be ****ed, so whenever Dempsey got close Tunney wrapped him up [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0tMBpsRgTU[/ame] Tell me, what is Tunney doing in that clip to dempsey? Boxing, then when Dempsey gets too close, he wraps up. Now that thats settled. Please address ALi holding behind the head, like he always used to do. Because Im pretty sure if I went down the line of the American greats of the last 50 years, I could find illegal habits in all of them.
Watch his fight against Carpentier. Simply clinching when a fighter gets close is not an artform in boxing, because there's no boxing when the clinch is initialised! Guys who make it into am artform are those like Johnson, who work when in a clinch. How is grabbing someone when they are close skillful? Really? The skill is working inside the clinch...which Tunney didn't do. Jack Johnson made it an artform. Tunney made footwork an artform. In fact, never mind Johnson. Watch Dempsey turn it into an artform in that video. As for Ali, what does that prove? Look at my post history. You'll find me criticising Ali regularly. He didn't always fight the best boxing...so what? What does that prove? Nothing.
Come on be fair... This super six tournament is high risk, built for legacy and likely to finish at least 2 careers at the top level. Pac Vs Cotto = Legacy, and pac vs most of his last fights. Haye Pushing it out at heavyweight, no matter how much you dislike him is risky when he could have sat at cruiser. Mosely Margo was considered pretty damn risky Cotto Clottey was risky, Hopkins was supposed to get retired by pavlik (was that last year I dont remember). Most good fights that should have happened have happened this year. Whenever pavlik gets it on with williams, klit v haye and pac v pbf we will pretty much have had a full house of wanted fights happening Weve had a shitload of great fights this year. The fans have been treated!
:goodI will second that!!! the guy is a ****en NUT and knows nothing about boxing with him it's all about hate thats why he's a looser...:yep
All you stupid brits praised Froch's "Dirty" victory over Dirrell but bash Ward even tho he was clearly dominating. Wards fouls were clearly unintentional, why would he need to foul if he was already kicking Kesslers ass? Froch on the other hand was frusterated by Dirrells movement so he decided to foul, but all u idiots said "He was just trying to make the fight because Dirrell was being so negative." Hypocrits
I never mentioned Froch. I don't get why Americans are so defensive. Anyone actually care to respond to my original point, rather than ranting about "EURO FIGHTERS!!!1!!112".
