Nice punching technique. Super smooth, fast combos. Always liked him.
The real turning point of his magnificent career was when he defended his IBF and WBA (regular) titles. Before the match, WBA has ordered the super champion of the division, Chris John, to face Gamboa. John said yes, but requested a fight before the showdown since he just got back from injury. Gamboa didn't mind either since he has also a fight in front of him. And then, Gamboa didn't pass the IBF 2x weigh-in and was stripped of BOTH of his belts despite of his KO victory. Gamboa never won any title again since then (Note : he won some interim belts, but he is no champion in 130 or 135)
Later on, he was involved in domestic abuse. And after that, things just went wrong all the time for him.
Gamboa was tidy as an amateur as well. Take a gander.
He did his best.
