Had he been allowed to continue, its probable that he would have survived to go back to his corner with one full minute to recuperate.. He also would have likely received an earful about getting careless.. Meanwhile in the other corner, McCall would have been receiving appraisal for an excellent first round, and probably been told to go out and try to finish the job before Lewis got his bearings back.. The second round would have no doubt seen a very aggressive Oliver McCall, and a somewhat cautious and weary Lennox Lewis.... The big question here is this.... Was that one punch all about luck, or did McCall have Lewis's number on that one and only evening? I will say this, losing to McCall may have been the best thing that happened to Lewis... Had he won, Manny Stewart might not have been hired to take over his camp.. Without this major event, Lewis may never have improved to the extent that he did, and perhaps would have gotten taken out by someone else at a later point in time..

I thought Lewis was stopped in the third? I've got this fight, will re-watch it and make a contribution. Personally feel Lennox could've gone on. Against Rahman he was too big a lump to recover.

He was wobbling for abit, but was speaking to the reff and very pissed off....

    Thats a good sign..

He could of be aloud to carry on, but then again......the Reff was only looking out for Lennox Lewis.

    He was Hurt..!!!

He was certainly on unsteady legs, but he showed good presence of mind to approach the ref making eye contact and tucking his gloves up under his chin. He knew full well what was happening and what he wanted to do. That was pretty good considering it was a heavy knockdown and he'd never experienced that in his professional career before.

And he was visibly outraged immediately when the stoppage was called. Certainly he was recovering quickly.

Regardless of whether you think the fight should have gone on, it certainly could have gone on. People have been allowed to continue in worse shape, and gone on to win.

So assuming that Lennox was allowed to continue, and did win a comfortable UD, and doesn't get that (at the time) disastrous loss, what happens to his career?

I think if he didnt make the technical adjustments he made under Emanuel Steward he would have never accomplished what he was able to do. He was just too offensive and unbalanced to face the punchers he did, plus he had a hard time with fighters once they got past his jab, ala Bruno and Mercer although Steward had him prepared well for Mercer.
Steward and Lewis for the most part had a very good idea of what they were going in against in every fight, and set their plan accordingly. Even then Lewis showed some shaky moments, but Lewis under Steward would have never approached the Mcall fight like he did, and under Correa he would have never boxed as cautiously against a fighter like Tua.

The ref could have let it go on; however, the moment McCall lands,
be ready to jump in. It seems this would have happened.

Lewis would have been knocked down again. Emmanuel Stewert trained McCall to time Lewis' right hand and connect with his own before Lewis could land his. It was a counter punch. Lewis always threw a jab followed immediately by a right hand. McCall snuck in close and landed his right hand first. The trick almost worked several times in the first round, but he succeeded in the second. If Lewis were to continue, McCall would have continued to follow Emmanuel's instructions and repeat the knockdown.
