Was at the fight mate and let me be clear, Lennox could have bloody well continued. Had good seats and could see Lennox's face clear as day. Got a bad deal on the tickets as well, but had a bird under me arm that night so. One or two fights went to the cards. Even the American bum McBride got a ko win.

I'd say the problem with Ali was that he fought on too long, not that his fights weren't stopped sooner. The Holmes fight could have been stopped much sooner, perhaps, but I don't think that would have made much difference to his overall health.

The best spin one can put on the Lewis-McCall stoppage was that it was an outlier: the law of averages means that some fights are going to be stopped with relatively little pretext, given how many are stopped too late.

Very true, but it's a bland historical fact that the Lewis-McCall stoppage was an unusual one. Were I inclined to conspiracy theories I'd say that King was making sure he was winning his bet on a McCall KO, but I always find human incompetance a more plausible explanation than human cunning.

Well two points. A boxer should never give a ref a reason to be able to use his discretion, same as going to the score card, and secondly, it's hard to fault a ref who is trying his best to act in the best interest of the fighter, even if it is YOUR fighter.

So I wouldn't put the stoppage down to human incompetance, rather it's a discetionary decision that you disagree with. Big difference.

And it's certainly not along the lines of a judges scorecard like the one Euginia Williams posted in the Lewis-Holyfield fight, the decision about stopping the Lewis-McCall fight could be argued either way. It almost boils down to personal preference, but in no way was it and out and out bad decision.

Lennox was badly hurt and to take further punishment at that point can only hurt a fighter...My guess would be Lennox would have been KO'd again or hurt worse. He went on to fight again without the mental and bodily scars

Ideally, boxers would win every fight with a one-punch KO in the first few seconds and have the ref do nothing but count. However, in boxing, you're going to get knocked down. If everything short of a flash knockdown ends the fight, then we've got a new sport.

I'm not in the business of doubting people's good intentions, but I'd rather live in a world with good decisions rather than good intentions. The ref in Weaver-Dokes 1 was looking out for Mike Weaver, I'm sure, but still cost him the title in an extremely controversial stoppage.

It was definitely a discrectionary decision. An incompetant discretionary decision.

Eugenia saw the fight differentely from everyone else. Surely scoring is just as much a subjective decision as when to stop a fight?

Lennox had been dropped from one punch too. He went from completely fine to struggling to continue in one punch. He didn't soak up a huge beating, and therefore should probably have been given the chance to continue, as he seemed to be recovering quickly. After all, he had recovered enough to be visibly outraged and protest coherantly as soon as the fight was called off.

But this fight is supposed to be more of a "wins a UD, who does he fight next, who beats him down the line" etc.

Are you saying Holmes has a bad chin? Holmes took great shots in his career. He's got a very good chin. Also, there was no question that he could continue once he rose from his knockdowns.

I think the referee made the right decision.
At "8" Lewis is falling into the referee. The referee is supposed to make a decision then and there.
Sure, Lewis might have been clear-headed but HIS LEGS ARE ALMOST TOTALLY GONE. They are jelly. Even after it's waved off, Lewis is staggering like a drunken sailor.

Should a referee send a man out to fight if his legs are almost totally gone ?

I dont believe comparing the Lewis-McCall stoppage to Holmes being knocked down by Snipes is valid.

    Look at Holmes :

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwA00uflaz0&feature=related[/ame]

Holmes is knocked down hard at 9:07, gets up immediately on unsteady legs and falls into the turnbuckle, but then paces up and down unassisted and in a straight line without falling into the referee at any point. And this is within the count of eight. Holmes's legs are not gone when referee counts the eight seconds, and Holmes got himself up a lot quicker than Lewis did.

Yeah, at about 9:20 of the Holmes clip he even does a little bounce on his feet to show he's ready to go on, and shake the cobwebs off.
Capable of walking in a straight line, capable of bouncing on his feet.

I dont think the Lewis stoppage was unjustified, but I do think Lewis would have probably survived had he been allowed to continue, not because of how hurt Lewis was or wasnt, but because of how bad Mcall was.

had the fight been allowed to continue , lewis would have taken some more shots , getting even more hurt , and would have been knocked out which means not rising at the count of 10. but since it was too obvious , the referee rightfully stopped the fight.
are you suggesting lewis could go on to KO mccall ?
to say he could have survived is a bold thing let alone.
