As the top P4P in boxing or are you talking econimically or are you talking overall?

Boxing probably won't recover well if Manny, JMM and Floyd retire at the same time. Hopkins and Mosley are rendering themselves irrelevant as we speak due to inactivity. If the top 3 P4P all retire at once we could be in deep ****. I think JMM will continue to box into his 40s though mainly because he's never gotten the true props he deserves with Morales and MAB around and will try to take advantage of it as they fade into bolivian.

One of the things that we can thank Manny, Morales, Barrera and company for is that they started to headline PPVs and became star attractions. In a sport dominating by big fighters, it was amazing to see little guys getting million dollar purses and putting on amazing fights. I think in that sense guys like Gamboa, Bernabe Conception, Jorge Linares (if he ever decides to be a boxer full time and not disappear to the mountains for months on end) and JuanMa Lopez will potentially pick up the slack for boxing.

Most importantly the retirement of those guys might actually force promoters to WORK to make new names instead of relying on the already proven ones.

Not necessarily. The financials don't represent that.

I'd say MANNY became mainstream and even that is a stretch. There's a lot of growing boxing still needs to do and it's going to take more than one guy to do it.

nothing. there will still be boxing. there will just be five fewer guys involved. :conf

there's nothing to "take over". boxing isn't a springboard for true crossover stardom like other sports (even the creme-de-la-hoya top-percentile most famous fighters are still considered "b" or "c" level celebrities at-large in the general public's view), and that isn't going to change when the aforementioned hang 'em up, and that's okay. sport's not going anywhere. it'll stay the rugged, once-proud, borderline underground affair it's been for a long time now...and i'm cool with that.

Problem is the guy who rallies that weight has lways been a relatively big(ger) fighter. Like say Tyson or Ali or Louis or Robinson or the Duran/Leonard/Hearns combination. Manny has always campaigned at the lower weight classes, which people still continue to snub to this day.

    Very well said....:good

I would hope for a change..... a change where boxers would care more about their legacies than money.... a change where most fans would care more about boxing and talk less about 'if makes cents, then it makes sense', a change where those who call themselves boxing fans stop behaving as promoters as if they would get a 'cut' of the purse when their favourite fighter is going to fight......

The financial numbers don't necessarily match this even if I agree with it or not. PPV wise? Things are as they've always been really.

I can't see into the future, but if there's no big names to fill those slots, then boxing is in for some trouble. The hardcore fans like us are in it for life, boxing will always be in our blood to the day we die. Boxing needs to find a way to **** away the younger generation from going to the UFC. This will be a challenge no doubt, but it's what needs to be done IMO.

Not sure where any of you guys live or that, but around my way boxing gyms are getting closed down left and right, gyms that were once a popular place in the 90's and into the early 2000's when I began boxing. Now are being replaced by fight leagues (MMA fighting), at least as far as the one gym I used to spar at when I was a little younger. If this trend continues, I see boxing not only becoming less popular, but also less skilled because there wont be as many fighters training to be a boxer as there was just a decade before.
