i totally agree with boxing shooting itself in the foot......but my impression is mma is looking at boxing as "being a thing of the past"......and it really doesnt help when roy jones decides to do joint ppv's with them......

Most MMA promotions don't acknowledge the existence of boxing. It's a little different than boxing where their fan base, commentators and promoters can't go a few lines without trying to drag MMA into their smear campaigns.

Boxing just needs to focus on making itself better, not on trying to make MMA worse.

I am not talking about "real boxing fans" as you narrow mindedly put it. The sport isn't funded solely by "real boxing fans" and Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya have been a huge part of megafights over the last few years.

"For who?" Who do you think? The sport in general.

Nothing you said makes any sense at all.

true, boxing needs to get better as far as marketing ability.......i dont think at the moment mma is a threat to boxing as such......

Where boxing will have a problem with mma is 20-30 years from now.....i have seen statistics in sports illustrated stating the average demographic for boxing is 35-60.....while mma is 18-34.........this will be a huge problem once the 18-34 year olds get older and dominate the business world.....

This is another thing. The idea that there are "real boxing fans" and "fake boxing fans." At some point or another we need to stop with that bull****. There's no such thing as real or fake boxing fans, only boxing fans. Even fans of specific fighters are boxing fans. This whole "Such and such is a real boxing fan" is novice bull****.

A kid who only likes Manny Pacquaio is just as big a boxing fan as a dude who only posts at the classical forum and knows the name of the MW champ from June 1928. If anything that Pac fan is more vital because he pays for PPVs where as us grizzly ****ers are trying to find a stream for it

What I meant is that the sport is not going to die just because some boxers are going to retire..... The question is ... do we need the so called mega fights where in reality there is nothing great in some of them???....

When I said real boxing fans I meant people that care most about the sport.... I never heard as I hear now about the cassual fan for example.... and that's why I said "real boxing fans"...

Hatton and Hoya had a lot of fans and they made a lot of money and they brought a lot of 'fans' to boxing for the moment they were up there, but there were many other fans that have always been there and still there and will be there and I think that those fans are more important because they care more about boxing..... in other words they are more involved in boxing or we can say that they are more boxing fans.....

Regarding the sport itself I don't really care if isnt in 1st place..... I'd rather see a sport where most of the fans are ok with it...

Boxers will always be there the same as construction workers always be there..... we need them....and they need us....I only hope they need us more than we need them so we can get better service, or in this case more quality fights at a better price....

Blah blah blah. I've watched MMA and have nearly fallen asleep. I'm assuming that the additional aspects you are referring to are when they are rolling around on the ground. Very exciting. :dead

Boxing eventually moves on like it did when people asked what would happen when Leonard/Hagler/Hearns/Duran or Tyson/Lewis/Holyfield/Bowe and others retire. Fighters don't all retire on the same day, it takes time and as times goes on other up and comers start to take charge.

That's a good example..... and even if they did..... life goes on..... I think at the end of the day the fans woud get the rewards. Hopefully a new kid will come around and fight and give it all for what he believes in.

No fighter is bigger than the sport. There's always a new batch of young fighters to carry the torch. Everything in life is cyclical.

Case in point, the Larry Holmes era wasn't exactly what people clamored for and boxing seemed to hit a rut in the post-Ali landscape as the heavyweight division (the flagship division like it or not) desperately needed an injection of excitement. Along came Mike Tyson and suddenly there was electricity in boxing again and aside from all the long-time fans who were always there for the ride, there was a whole new legion of fans that had it not been for Tyson probably wouldn't have taken to the sport. Tyson was the hook and they have remained fans. I see it now with people who never gave a **** about boxing asking me all kinds of questions about Manny Pacquiao s they prepare to shell out the PPV money for his fights. Sometimes it takes an exciting personality to ignite boxing and other times it takes a super-talent. Whatever it will be, that fighter (or fighters) is out there.

They keep coming, no they might not be compared to others before them but will be great in their own way. All up to managers/promoters to do a good job promoting them.

In the meantime in the uk and ireland we have, Sutherland, Jeffries, De-gale, khan, Tyson Fury, Saunders.. and on and on. Sports looking in great shape from the emerald isle. I wondered what would happen when Eubank retired and it has never looked better. Only problem is the friggen television networks and the beaming of the sport around the world. If we can get that sorted then we are on the way to the golden age.

You talk like boxing just hinges on these names. Great servants to our sport but, like in all sports, others will take over and new legacies will be created. Boxing is very healthy and I don't buy into all of this 'boxing is dying' business. Case and point- how many people are there on this forum and all the others?:good
