We have fanboys argueing who should get the most money. Fighters are measured not by there talent, but there money making ability We argue about who gets the better PPV ratings. As soon as a boxer loses he is somehow not worthy of another big fight. Its all madness, bring back real boxing !!!!
Fighters risk their lives, they need to get paid while they can. If there were more bigtime TV venues for fighters they would be able to fight more often for serious money and then maybe they would be able to take a few losses without it derailing their career. As it is, any loss can seriously hurt their marketability. Sad but true.
Fighters don't really want to fight each other anymore. All they want is each others money while risking as little of their legacy as possible. They don't want to fight the best in prime for a legacy (way too risky for long term money making). When was the last time you saw two fighters so eager to get it on that they even would've fought for free if nobody was financing it? That would've been the old days....
I came here specifically because no one hardly talks about boxing anymore & as a fan I basically have few people to discuss the sport with . I remember once actually watching world class fighters like Hearns/Hagler/Leonard on ABC sports. Until boxing is a bit more accessible as it was as recently as the 70's/80's & reaches a younger audience it is doomed. Pay Per View is cool for title matches ,but boxing should have more quality fights availabe to the public besides PPV.
Very few fighters who actually care about legacy anymore. I guess 2 factors I define legacy by are 1) If the fighter doesn't fight the best boxers before he retires and 2) Fighting on when they know they can't produce anymore but keep going because of the $$$$ If boxers REALLY cared about Legacy - Hatton would have accepted 40/60 Paquiao would have accepted 50/50 Mayweather would fight Cotto, Margarito and Paquiao. Without them it gives people license to debate years from now - 'He quit when there were still big fights out there' With those fights people people can't accuse him of ducking. Calzaghe would fight Dawson and Hopkins II and tried harder to get RJJ and Hopkins years ago. RJJ would have fought Johnson after Tarver I then retired if he knew he had nothing left in the tank, similar story with ODLH after Felix Strum. Holyfield/Tyson would have tried harder to fight Lewis at his peak and vice versa. When did it all go wrong? Thats what I want to know.
Same old ****! We still have lots of talent out there... and we still get great fights now and again,,, and when we do there's nothing like it in the world of sports! BUT... the same boxing BS continues... santioning bodies, managers and promoters protecting their assets and squabbling over money = preventing alot of the best fights from ever happening. Bad decisions/crooked judging... call it what you want,,, it's seems to be as bad as ever nowadays = makes a mockery of the "sport". Boxing still is and always was the best... and worst pro sport of all-time!
Agree, boxing has become ruined . In the past ,if the public demanded a fight, it happened . Or the top two from a division always fought . That is a distant memory . All because of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Two lads who grew up poor, especially manny, arguing over the odd million when they are already set for life . Bull**** :-(
I guess it is because of todays society and the ease of moneymaking. In todays society money means more than honour (a fighter who has millions while only having fought bums will get better treatment in todays society than a fighter who fought great fighters but is broke). In todays society, fighters get rich way too easily and way too quickly.
Too many hangers on, belts, sanctioning bodies, people who don't give a **** about the sport getting money from it.Too many words, not enough action . Don King, while being a crook , at least knew what the public wanted and got it done . On the other hand, did he start the demise ?
I'm thankful there is MMA to replace my appetite to watch combat sports. Hopefully MMA won't go down the same road Boxing has. Losing in MMA doesn't mean your career is over, you just have to get back in line to earn your right to fight the champ again.
yeah but the point is that fighters weren't ruined by a loss in the old days, they fought a LOT more often and it was understood that a fighter can and probably will lose on any given day. Nowadays when a fighter takes a loss their next purse will be 10% of what it was before they lost, and everyone will be screaming about them being exposed.
