What Heavies would last in the 1800's?

That is if the fighters were skilled enough to do so, which, based on footage, they certainly weren't in my opinion. I'm in Stonehands boat on this one. I don't disregard old timers(in fact you'll see many hig up in my P4P lists for what they accomplished for their time) but I also don't believe they were as skilled at the very beginnings of the sport(Queensbury rules) as they are now around 120 years later. I think the sport has been at it's peak technically since around the 30' and 40's.

 

Not what I was arguing. Today's fighters train for 12 round fights, all 3 minutes. Rounds back in the day could last 3 seconds, there was no set time from what I understand. Given the vast difference in skill, I don't see it lasting many of those rounds.

It would be if he was facing an educated jab, straight, left hook, etc, rather than punches of the variety that a Stanley Ketchell showed(giant, wild swings).​

 

Very rarely did the fights actually last 45 rounds though, and that is when the fighters were matched up equally for the most part, so I don't see how the distance is a factor in this one, considering the difference in skill. And the fact that rounds wouldn't end after a knockdown only decreases the old-timers chances.

I'd say a fair deal could do something like that against a random bum. It's not like he did it for the entire fight. Top guys do things similar to that(though not exactly with the hands on the hips) often times against world class boxers. I see no reason why a random bum off the street would be any different.​

 

Certainly. Pavlik isn't really known as a slick boxer, and I have experience.

Guys like Pep, Hamed, Whitaker, etc have all done things to make your head spin in fights, evasive maneuvers, etc. It's not this guy fought the entire fight with his hands on his hips, constantly avoiding punches, it was likely just a highlight of the night. Guys like Locche and others have done similar things on film.

 

Here's where the space-time issue comes to roost: If a skilled HW today were transplanted into the 1800's, it would only take a couple fights of said skilled HW for those advantages (since they hadn't been seen before) to be noticed, and thus integrated, into the old school fighters' styles.

As for the original question, I have no idea how it'd go. It's a completely different world of fighting back then.

He barely has the ticker for fights in the modern era, the oldschool was much more brutal. Skillwise he'd be well ahead of the bareknuckle guys, and the same is true for his physical attributes(probably) but psychologically he'd be overmatched to the point where I don't even know if I'd favour him against the top tier champions.

 

I like the solid work ethic of a man like Ibragimov, he is pretty persistant and very strong........
