What heavyweights in history could throw 60 punches per round for the whole fight?

Can anyone name a heavyweight (contender or champ) who could throw around 60 punches per round for 10, 12, or 15 straight rounds?

Assuming the answer to this question is no, then I ask, of those heavies in history who were known for throwing 60 per rounds, how many rounds did it take for them to tank (i.e., 5, 6, 7 rounds, etc.)?

I'm thinking that Frazier or Marciano might have been able to do this, but I don't have the stats to prove it.

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Ibeabuchi averaged 81 punches a round against Tua (who was around 65 a round) in their 12 round throw down.

Very interesting. I didn't know that.

There are numerous guys I can think of who threw loads of punches in the early -- and possibly even middle rounds -- but they usually tanked by the 6th or 7th rounds.

Marciano threw over 100 punches in the 15th round against Ezzard Charles. Unfortunately, only half the fight exists. If the entire fight existed It could very well still be the HW punch-output record. I'm sure Marciano could individually hold that record (If such film and stat existed).

Ibeabuchi set the record for a heavyweight fight.

Tua averaged 62 per round in that fight too.

From boxrec: This fight set a CompuBox record for most combined punches thrown in a heavyweight fight: 1,730.

100 punches in the 15th round...that is incredible. I knew that Marciano may have been the heavyweight champ who threw, on average, the most punches per round. I'm still not sure, though.

What's your guess about RM's average, for his world class fights (from the time he became a contender through his title reign)?

Can you think of anyone else who threw as many shots per round? I know Joe Frazier fought like that in the early and middle rounds. I don't know if he could go 12 or 15 straight like that, though.

What an absolute beast of a fighter, imagine trying to fight that? Horrific thought...especially when you think that even if you cover up, he'd still hit you on the arms...anywhere in fact. He was a fighter who would break your heart, as well as your body. I bet Ez was sore the next day!

Allot of fighters that didn't could, not doing it can be by choice in order to limit counter opportunities. A top level fighter should be able to throw 60 a round though

And also limiting chances of gassing out or being overshadowed in the latter rounds.

Vitali set a punch stat record in his match with Johnson, so he could do it, and has done it in other matches.

Most people have Marciano because of the 15th round of the Charles. I counted just over 100 punches that Rocky threw. Of all the bouts I saw him on film, that and a round against Moore were the only 2 rounds that I counted that he threw 100 or more punches.

I watched the 1st Marciano/Walcott 1 bout and I counted the punches that Rocky threw (not landed). This is what I came out with.

    Round 1 - 28 punches
    Round 2 – 34 punches
    Round 3 - 35 punches
    Round 4 - 40 punches
    Round 5 was not filmed
    Round 6 - 45 punches
    Round 7 - 25 punches
    Round 8 - 23 punches
    Round 9 - 36 punches
    Round 10 - 43 punches
    Round 11 - 36 punches
    Round 12 - 28 punches

    Total – 11 Rounds – 373 Punches – Average 33.9 Punches Per Round.
Note: The average punches thrown by a heavyweight since "CompuBox" started counting, is 45.

I didn't include Round #13, BUT Rocky threw 6 punches in that round, including the last two, a Great Right Cross, and a Left Hook.

I could be off some, but I tried to count every punch he threw, even the real short ones when they were Clinching.

Against Archie Moore I counted a total of 608 punches that Rocky threw. At the end of the 8th round he threw 550 punches, which is an average of about 64 punches a round. In the last round, which only lasted just over a minute, he threw 58 punches.

In rounds 4 and 6, he was just under or just over 100 punches (98 & 103). In round 8, I have him throwing 86.

It's very hard to see if some of these were actually thrown, but I counted anything that even looked like a punch and this is what I came out with

If you go by "CompuBox" the all time record is 237 punches, of which 222 were power punches, by Vince Phillips in the 12th round against Ray Oliverira on December 22, 2000. The boxer in 2nd place is Ray Oliverira in the same round, when he threw 226. In 3rd place in Zack Padilla when he threw 207 punches on December 15, 1993, against the same Ray Oliverira.

The record for 1 bout is held by Antonio Margarito, who threw 1675 punches against Joshua Clottey on December 2, 2006. He is followed by Zack Padilla, with 1596, which 1287 were power punches, against Oliveira, and Wayne McCullough with 1572 against Oscar Larios on February 10, 2005.

If your just looking at the heavyweights, Lance Whitaker threw 122 in the 6th round against Lou Savarese on March 6, 1999, which 112 were power punches.

    He is followed by:

David Bostice 121, against Ed Mahone 10th round
Lou Savarese 120, against Buster Mathis 1st round
Joe Mesi 118, against John Rainwater 2nd round
Sergei Liakhovich 116, against Friday Ahunanya 10th round
Sedreck Fields 116, against Willie Palms 5th round
Owen Beck 114, against George Arias 12th round
Juan Carlos Gomez 113, against Sinan Samil Sam 4th round
Sedreck Fields (again) 113, against Willie Palms 6th round
Corey Sanders 112, against James Gaines 9th round

The record for a heavyweight bout is Owen Beck with 1102 against George Arias on September 20, 2003.

    He is followed by:

David Bostice with 1044, against Ed Mahone on October 6, 2000
Vitali Klitschko with 1013, against Kevin Johnson on December 12, 2009

    Most Power punches:
David Bostice with 739, against Ed Mahone on October 6, 2000
Muhammad Ali with 712, against Joe Frazier on October 1, 1975 (14 rounds) Frazier threw 627.

Note: Ali threw a total of 917 punches in that bout, which is an average of 65.5 punches a round.

Thanks for the post, hhascup. That provides me with the info I was seeking. Your Marciano data is particularly illuminating. It appears that Rocky didn't necessarily overwhelm his foes by tossing 60+ per round. If your stats are any indication, Marciano conserved his strength, which is why his shots were so devastating even in the final rounds.

One severe problem is see with CompuBox is their categorization of "power punches." Many of these so-called "power punches" are not power shots at alll. Rather, they are just non-jabs. CompuBox seems to count any punch which isn't a jab as a power punch, which to me (at least), doesn't quite make sense.
