Tyson, by a margin, not Ali.

Why not ?! Since this is a fantasy tournament, they are all at their best, they never age.

I simply think he is massively overrated.

You could say the same about many fighters. I happen to think Holyfield is extremely over rated but I don’t go out of my way to degrade the man constantly.

That kind or removes what separates the best from the worst of them.

I happen to think that Holyfield is extremely underrated. Look at the odds for Holyfield -Tyson I.

Ali would win it. Holyfield would make the final four. Lewis would stop Louis.

    Ali
    Lewis
Holyfield (4x heavyweight champ get Liston)
    Louis (bad draw with Lewis)

I’m torn on my final four. I know Ali and Lewis but torn between Liston Foreman Louis and Marciano for the final two spots. I have Ali and Lewis above the others then 3-6 is all pretty close for me.

Ali wins the most easily. There isn't a fighter on the list that I would favor over prime Ali. He beats all match up of the fighters.

The more interesting thing to me is who is #2. I think George Foreman doesn't have a weakness outside of slick fighters. The only slick HW is Ali. Everyone else gets shredded by Big George.

Joe Frazier could be interesting if he avoids Foreman and Liston. He is a nightmare for everyone else. He could sneak some wins in if those two get upset. He has best shot vs prime Ali. I could see him punishing Lennox Lewis. Frazier is the biggest matchup for Lewis.

I thought about it. I finally did an Excel matrix diagram. ( I could not upload the file or a pic. Hope you don't get eye cancer. So don't be mad at me...)
Every fighter fights every other fighter 100 Times. The Values are the number of wins. You can argue about that. But that are just my expectations. For myself i have defined: every fighter to his prime...no injuries, not on drugs, no excuses.
I have chosen the best version of the 1970's Ali because he was not really tested in the 60s. The 1970's Ali fought all the legendary brawls...so it is easier to evaluate.

    1. Muhammad Ali X 80 65 70 65 65 60 60 55 55 70 75 55 60 65 70 970 1
    2. Joe Louis 20 X 35 45 50 45 55 45 60 40 65 70 55 65 55 80 785 6(t)
    3. George Foreman 35 65 X 60 95 55 70 45 50 55 60 70 40 55 55 90 900 2
    4. Lennox Lewis 30 55 40 X 50 45 65 55 50 40 60 50 55 55 60 75 785 6(t)
    5. Joe Frazier 35 50 5 50 X 30 55 65 50 50 50 70 45 45 45 60 705 11
    6. Sonny Liston 35 55 45 55 70 X 55 60 50 50 60 65 50 55 60 70 835 4
    7. Rocky Marciano 40 45 30 35 45 45 X 50 50 50 50 50 30 50 50 75 695 12(t)
    8. Larry Holmes 40 55 55 45 35 40 50 X 45 40 55 55 50 55 60 50 730 9(t)
    9. Evander Holyfield 45 40 50 50 50 50 50 55 X 50 55 40 55 40 50 65 745 8
    10. Mike Tyson 45 60 45 60 50 50 50 60 50 X 60 60 55 55 60 85 845 3
    11. Jack Dempsey 30 35 40 40 50 40 50 45 45 40 X 45 40 50 45 65 660 14
    12. Riddick Bowe 25 30 30 50 30 35 50 45 60 40 55 X 30 50 45 60 635 15
    13. Tyson Fury 45 45 60 45 55 50 70 50 45 45 60 70 X 55 60 75 830 5
    14. Vitali Klitschko 40 35 45 45 55 45 50 45 60 45 50 50 45 X 55 65 730 9(t)
    15. Jack Johnson 35 45 45 40 55 40 50 40 50 40 55 55 40 45 X 60 695 12(t)
    16. Wladimir Klitschko 30 20 10 25 40 30 25 50 35 15 35 40 25 35 40 X 455 16

Of course Ali is 1st with 970 wins out of a possible 1500. Foreman 2nd with 900 and so on. The midfield is very close together. What is surprising is Fury on 5th place, because what the chart doesn't take into account is the fact that you have to fight a certain number of fights in one period.Ali for example had 6-7 good fights per year. For Fury this is unimaginable. He would probably cancel 4 fights and lose them by court. But nethertheless a big guy like Fury will be a missmatch for many of the smaller fighter which weren't used to fight big guys like that during their times.

Edit: excessive holding, stiff arm and pushing down is not allowed, and is ruled as a foul...so that makes it harder for guys like Lewis or Wlad.

Foreman over Liston (but neither could win it all) Louis and Marciano could win it all, though, actually.. depending on the year..

    Mostly, though, Ali..

    Ali first choice.
    Then Holmes
    Then Lennox.

Awesome post. I feel like your rankings are very fair. I like how you took into account matchups and styles. Based on your rankings, there are only 3 clear mismatch fights (75%+ odds to win) outside of Wladimir Klitschko who you seem to hate.

    Foreman over Frazier 95%
    Ali over Louis 80%
    Ali over Bowe 75%

Those 3 plus you have W. Klitschko as a big underdog vs Louis, Foreman, Lewis, Marciano, Tyson, and Fury.

Your rankings also don't matchup with the seeding that I had. Here are the big mismatches with your rankings vs my rankings.

    You ranked them higher:
    Fury +8 seeds higher
    Tyson +7
    V. Klitschko +4.5
    J. Johnson +2.5
    Liston +2

You ranked these fighters lower than my seed:
    Frazier -6 seeds lower
    Marciano -5.5
    Louis -4.5
    Bowe -3
    Dempsey -3
    Lewis -2.5
    Holmes -1.5

    My takeaways:
-You are down on Joe Louis for some reason. I don't know why Ali is a huge style mismatch for him (80% underdog)
-You aren't a fan of Joe Frazier in this tournament
-You seem to think Vitaly Klitschko is underrated and would be competitive vs. every fighter except Joe Louis. Interesting
-While you like some of the Big fighters (V. Klitschko, Foreman, Fury) you aren't as high on a few of them too (Bowe, W. Klitschko)
