If I was training him I'd advise a bro split of chest n triceps, back n biceps , legs and shoulders with a touch of cardio every sesh. Up the protein and fats lower the carbs and get stage ready
He should bring in some of the smaller and faster guys in Boxing. Sparring or even moving around with HW's isn't enough. He also needs reaction work & speed work.
At least Joshua isnt as scared of getting caught as Audley Harrison was. If I was going to create one dream fight and market it as a cure for insomnia -- a sweet dream fight, if you will -- it would be Harrison vs Okolie. Good grief!
AJ don't fancy that straight left but yeah that's the only chance AJ has, he has to go for broke, his career will be on the line
But how do you spar preparing for Usyk? You can't replicate his style and the closest AJ would get is doing everything to get Gvozdyk on board. However, The Nail and Usyk are great friends so that wont happen
He beat Wlad at 250, anyone watch that fight back. Realize he was using more lateral movement, and fighting on the backfoot. He was standing his ground more with Usyk.
Thats it, Joshua just needs to bulk up to 250.. no... 270, and just go for broke. It will make my bank account flourish. When the weigh in comes and Joshua's in the 270s im putting the house on Usyk by TKO
Adding weight would a recipe for disaster. Joshua doesn’t clinch or roughhouse at all so he won’t tire Usyk out with the added bulk. Yeah he might punch slightly harder but he’ll be even slower and gas out quicker. The only reason he made it 12 was due to his improved conditioning.
If I were his advisor I’d tell him to not take the rematch and instead fire his trainer. He’s still fairly young for a HW so a couple years of rebuilding against lower-tier opposition would help him.
you can't train eating a punch. This is AJ's issue. Usyk isn't a power puncher at heavyweight and his punches where making AJ think twice about letting his hands go.
Cover up and walk him down. Only throw when hes got usyk cornered. Bang in the body shots. Hes got to find a way to go forward covering up and get usyk working while reducing his own output. He played into usyks hands by boxing him. His biggest problem was his left hand came down and he kept getting caught. Get up to 250. But work on fighting as a 250 lb man. Reduce his punch output. Cover up going forward. Work on cutting off the ring. Usyks a good mover...but if hes throwing and your not...concentrating on using your size and strength to cover up there should be oppertunities to throw when hes got usyk where he wants him. Big mistake was trying to throw with usyk. Forget points....and concentrate on getting to him at some point in every round.
Joshua should just let his hands go more even if it means he'll be landing on Usyks guard. It seems like Joshua wouldn't throw unless he thought the punch would land. Which meant Usyk could feint or move as much as he wanted as long as he didn't leave any openings. Joshua and his corner doesn't seem to understand that punching, even if it isn't scoring would slow Usyk down and prevent him from doing whatever he wanted so long as he is landing on Usyk guard and not missing wildly.
He needs to do a Paul Williams vs Quintana type of reversal. But really, I don't know. I feel like being overly aggressive could play into a skilled fighter like Usyk's hands. I think the main thing is to throw his jab with more authority. He was pawing it the whole night.
AJ vs Usyk is what happens when someone from the mean streets of Watford meets someone who actually knows what mean streets are.
