There's been quite a bit of debate today on whether De La Hoya really lost "all" of his big fights. Some people will follow the official results, and other people create their own shadow records for De La Hoya, where they simply refuse to acknowledge fights he should have won and/or fights he should have lost. What can't be disputed is that, win or lose, few boxers in history had a rogue's gallery quite like Oscar's. What also can't be disputed is that De La Hoya's standing would have been better served if he won his big fights officially. So let's say he did. Let's say he clearly beat Whitaker, Mosley (both times), Hopkins, Trinidad, Mayweather and even Pacquiao. Let's say he dominated them all (117-111 or wider), and retired undefeated after the Pacquiao fight. Let's say he dominated the fights we consider to be gifts, like Sturm and Quartey so there was no doubt about the result. Where would you rank him all time if he retired an undisputed 45-0 with that same resume?
since when was Sturm a big fght anyways, it's not just winning or losing it's all about how you perform.
I wasn't mentioning just the big fights when I made that list, I was mentioning all the losses and the controversial fights being dominations instead of debatable outcomes.
Lets be honest.. if Oscar dominated pacman we wouldn't care because he was the favorite going in (i think) plus he was way bigger and we didn't know Pac would turn into this monster we see today... also if he beat Sturm we wouldn't think much of it or Quartey (decisively).. we wouldn't think too much.... he should have beaten Tito but failed at the end.. had close fights with Mosley and lost to Hopkins (who even though better than the last two names was far less popular).... so if he beats all those guys his status wouldn't change too too much than what it is now.. I mean he would rank higher but it wouldn't leap out at us tremendously (unless he completely dominates them like the TS said).. but if he beat an undefeated p4p no.1 Mayweather I think that would solidify him as a top ten if not 15.... i think that would be the win that really propelled him... just my opinion... i think he is already a top 40 p4p...
If I've actually seen the fights myself, I rate off of my own opinion of what happened in those fights. Even officially this guy is 20-6 against world champions. Let me repeat that again. He's 20-6 against world champions...in six weight classes, officially. ...20-6. When you consider that 5 of his six losses against his level of competition, were all competitive, if not considered quite controversial...impressive. Think about this for a moment. 26 of his 45 professional fights were against current, former or future world champions, in six weight classes.
Dumb ...what if, what if... and what if DLH was a time traveler and beat Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns and then moved up to beat Marvin Hagler then knocks out Roy Jones then Mike Tyson....then goes back to defeat Sugar Ray Robinson.
I'll tell you what would happen. He wouldn't be Oscar de La Hoya if he had enough game to win all his big fights.
THE IF FACTOR....QUITe funny.... IF my mother had beat Tyson we wouldn't be having this argument..... probably!! if....................... but he didn't... just as my mom didn't beat Tyson..:good
