Let's pretend that Dempsey fought Greb and lost the title to Greb. What then? Would he give Dempsey a rematch? Would he fight Wills? Would he fight the Tunney that beat Dempsey twice, a Tunney who would be stronger, more experienced then when they fought previously. I don't see Greb being able to hold the title long.
If Greb did beat Dempsey and to add more wood to the fire, say Greb beat Dempsey in the rematch where would Greb's ranking be as a heavyweight?
I think that anybody who had beaten Dempsey post Toledo, would have gained recognition as an all-time great for doing it. Dempseys currency was that high.
Jesus effing christ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, you can NOT become an ATG on the strength of beating one. Otherwise Kirkland Laing becomes one. NOT POSSIBLE.nut
Greb is already an ATG. If he had beaten Dempsey he would be a household name, the hype would have been stratospheric. Instead nowadays when you ask for the greatest middle weights guys say "Hagler, Monzon ... and that Chris Eubank guy?"
Reckon Greb would have become even more famous than he already was if he had defeated Dempsey. Take it as a guarantee that he would have fought everybody as champion, no colour line. Greb was a tremendous work horse of a fighter, fought many times every year. How long he would have held the title would have depended on when he won it, Wills might have taken it from him or Tunney for sure.
I think Dorothy would have clicked her heels together and said "there is no place like home 3 times".
Greb beats Dempsey there would be film of him and he would probably be regarded as the best fighter to ever live to the casuals who always just say SRR.
