What if Felix Tito Trinidad had remained at 154 lbs, instead of moving to 160 lbs ?

Winky was far too risky a fight and was still toiling in the dungeons. Had Winky got the decision over Vargas I think there may have been a chance for that fight because then he would've had a title and been a roadblock.

 

But Winky did not get the decision against Vargas. Tito destroyed Vargas. Quite frankly, Winky struggled against guys like Bronco McCart. Tito might kill a guy like McCart if they shared the ring. The bottom line is that there is no evidence Tito avoided fighting Wright. There is, however, evidence that Wright had not earned a shot at Tito's title at 154.

 

Maybe he should have been winning? Leading into Tito’s year at 154, Winky had gone 1-2, losing clearly to Harry Simon and close but fair to Vargas, his lone win against a journeyman. His first fight that year was a second fight with Bronco McKart in September, which was after Tito-Vargas was already signed. Then he beat Keith Mullings at the end of the year after Mullings, after Mullings had lost his two previous bouts. Not really much reason to fight Winky when Tito thrashed his conqueror in a unification then went onto the middleweight division.

 

I don’t think it would’ve gone well. Oscar and Mosley would probably have moved up to beat him. And we already know what Winky was capable of.

 

Winky hit his peak by becoming more stationary and sitting on his jab after the Vargas fight.
