What if George Foreman fought Larry Holmes in early 1978?

In this hypothetical scenario we will say that Foreman fights Jimmy Young in the Garden instead of the blistering heat of San Juan and gets the super-slick as well as tough as nails out of there in the 5th round.

Norton was the top contender for pretty much the whole year of 1977. However, if Foreman beats Young I seriously doubt Norton would go anywhere near that fight being that he was destroyed by Foreman three years before in 1974.

Ali was biding his time taking on Alfredo Evangelista before accepting a fight with the dangerous Earnie Shavers at the end of September.

This means that Foreman would have probably taken a stay busy fight that summer or early fall. Maybe someone like Joe Bugner or Stan Ward?

I could envision a stunning scenario where a tough, young lion named Larry Holmes takes on the highly feared Big George in an absolute blockbuster for the vacant WBC heavyweight title in March of 1978. I know Holmes was a Don King fighter but am not certain who promoted Foreman towards the end of his first career. If a deal could be hashed out between rival promoters you have the biggest heavyweight title fight in years not involving a fellow named Ali.

Who would have taken it? I believe at that time LH had what it took to defeat Foreman. However, he would have had to fight more the way he did against Shavers (who looked stale in the first Holmes fight) than against Norton which was a classic shootout and one of the greatest heavyweight title fights of all-time.

I think Larry would win a 15 round decision or late round TKO. I think George was in the great rivalry of fights, but Larry was greater. More speed, better jab and boxing skills.

I love George, but it probably would have been Larry's coming-out fight, instead of Shavers. Holmes was ready for the title two or three years before he got the shot. He was forced to wait in line while a bunch of others had their chance first.

Probably. Holmes was near peak. Foreman was not.

But '73 Foreman against prime Holmes could be another story. Maybe.

Holmes wins, he has great skills, also he has advantage in speed, but the only way he stops Foreman is if Foreman gasses badly.

Larry never had power of Ron Lyle, not even close.

it is funny because the people is talking like if holmes would win in 1978 because he was better overall haha, foreman mentally was not the same guy in 1978 after his defeat by ali, anyway 1978 foreman would have a great chance to knock him out, the bum shavers had holmes nearly knocked out. prime vs prime foreman would ko the crap of the peanut, probably he would end down between the ropes like a ******ed

and no, holmes did not have the style to beat foreman, he was not elusive, he was static, he traded blows with punchers and his weak point was a big right hand. foreman was bigger, stronger harder puncher he got a better chin.

Larry schools Foreman. Theres a reason why Foreman ran from Holmes throughout the 90s

Great replies on this topic. However, one thing folks are omitting is the mental aspect of this fight. Holmes was a guy who could get into his opponent's heads. At that time Foreman, despite all his outward bravado, was an insecure bully. As we well know, no one bullied Holmes.

In the beginning of this fight I see a deadly-serious Holmes with laser focus being cautious and circling away from Foreman's right hand. Foreman had an excellent left hook too but I believe the right was the blow Holmes was more susceptible to. If the Easton Assassin survives Foreman's early onslaught then he can take command of this fight.

As Foreman starts to tire Holmes will start ripping him with combos fuelled by that incredible jab. In addition he will be talking to Foreman in clinches getting into his head and filling Big George with self-doubt. Also with the realization that not only is he badly tiring, but he also is soaking up considerable punishment from Holmes. Holmes, not as slick as Jimmy Young, but a much better offensive fighter, will start busting Foreman up after the middle rounds. Eventually Foreman will gas and succumb to this onslaught and Holmes will kayo Big George around the 10th round.

the reason is because foreman did not need holmes for nothing in the 90s, holmes did need foreman desperated, because his resume wa spure garbage, shot ali, tonsof bums , no rematch with spoon, chinni shavers nearly knocked him out... he was desperated for a big name in his curriculum, and like always he was trying to do it against a past prime man .. holmes had nothing that foreman wanted in the 90s, foreman was calling tyson,

this one is one of the biggest shits i did read ever on this forum.. lmao holmes was ready for the title in 1975 or 76? :rofl he did his pro debut in 1973, in 75 or 76 he ha dno experience and he fought a bunch of tomato cans, the team of foreman wanted him in 1976 and the team of larry wanted no part of a fighter like foreman at that time when larry had this poor experience. holmes win 1975 -76 would have lost vs ron lyle, ken norton, jimmy young, foreman and maybe even against ali, he was absolutely nobody in 75-76

One of my favorite what if's! If this happened, Holmes does better than Jimmy Young. In other words he'd beat Foreman soundly. With a 1978 Foreman win on his resume, you can make a strong case for Holmes being #1 overall among heavies.

I've always felt that Larry could handle Foreman, and had they fought in 1978 I think he would have won in an upset.

He just has everything needed to take on Foreman, who battled against guys who could move and box. Holmes also has the durability to hang tough if caught by a bomb or two.

So for me, Holmes by decision. I would not rule out a late stoppage either.

    Foreman called out Tyson

yet ignored Holmes, dropped his belt to avoid Tucker and dropped the other one to avoid Schulz

Didnt mention Lewis, Bruno, Ruddock, Mcall, Bowe or anyone with a pulse

who wasnt chinny or a former lhw/cw
